

Age 91, Havelock, has passed away September 29, 2014 at Tideview Terrace, Digby. Born February 5, 1923, he was the last surviving son of Minot and Evangeline Mullen. Austin has long been a respected member of his church and community. After graduating high school at the age of 16, he was employed as the paymaster in charge of payroll at Nova Scotia Timberlands. At the age of 17 he attended the DeVry Institute in Toronto to study wireless operating and was employed as an operator at a lighthouse on the Great Lakes. As a member of the Canadian Armed Forces he was trained and prepared to ship overseas to Europe. He received 2 weeks leave and came home to marry his sweetheart, Dorothy Jean, on April 14, 1945. The war ended before he was deployed and he returned home to tend to the farm. As a graduate of the Normal College in Truro, he went on to teach on reservations in Skeena Crossing, BC and Oka, Quebec, as well as home in Havelock. Back home in Havelock, he continued the tradition of mink farming started by his father in 1931. He went on to become president of Nova Scotia Mink Breeders and Canada Mink Breeders, and was respected as an authority on mink farming by all in the business. He was predeceased by wife, Dorothy Jean, and brothers, Walton Kitchener, Earl Foster, and Donald Eaton. He is survived by sisters-in-law, Stella Mullen, Phyllis Stewart, Harriette Sabean, Jeanne Mullen and Ruth Mullen; children, Dixon Derwood, Brian Donald (Kimberley), Maureen Isabel (Dr. Patrick) Potter, and Blair Edward (Janice); 11 grandchildren, Dr. Katherine (Gregory) Melanson, Erin, Robin, Morgan, Donovan, Meghan (Jason) Clendining, Katelyn (Dany) Potter, James, Paul (Paige), Michael, Jenna (Dalton) Amero; 4 great-grandchildren, Austin, Wyatt and Jensen Mullen, and Quinlan Amero. Visitation will be held at Jayne’s Funeral Home in Weymouth for family Thursday, Oct. 2, from 7-9PM, and open to the public Friday, Oct. 3 from 2-4PM and 7-9PM. Funeral services will take place Saturday, Oct. 4 at 2PM at the Church of Christ in Weymouth, Pastor Merle Zimmerman officiating.
