She was born Betty June Coleman, June 11, 1931 in Evansville, Indiana to John Coleman and Ivilla Coleman nee Loving and grew up with 5 other siblings, John Wilford, William, Eleanor, Bernice and Maxine. She was given was an Outstanding Performance Award in 1980 for her service as a Military Pay Examiner and Directorate of Division Resource Management. She retired after 27 years of service in 1993.
Because she never lost her love of travel, when she retired from the Civil Service, she became a travel agent and organized many cruises and trips for family and friends.
Generous of spirit, she was active as a volunteer in many groups throughout her lifetime. She was a Cub Scout den mother, a member of the Ft. Dix VFW Women’s Auxiliary and the organization Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) as well as being active in the church. In addition, she also crocheted lap blankets and newborn baby hats for various hospitals in the area.
Interestingly, in 1963, she was among the 250,000 people who attended the 1963 March on Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his “I have a dream” speech.
