

Carroll Ray Mitchell passed away at home in Whiting, NJ on November 6, 2017, after a long battle with cancer. He was born on February 7, 1932 in Abilene, Texas and later moved to New Jersey with the family after World War II ended.
Ray graduated from Clifton High School in 1950. He was on the football team and was Captain of the Clifton track team and specialized in the hurdles. In 1950 he set a new state record for the hurdles that lasted for ten years.
He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1956 and was stationed much of that time in Germany. He ended his military career as a Staff Sergeant with the Air Police.
After his discharge from the Air Force, he attended Montclair State College, Fairleigh Dickinson and The Newark College of Engineering. In August of 1957, he married Edith Pontier.
During his career in chemistry, he worked first at Uniroyal, then ABB Lummus in Bloomfield, and finally Beckman Coulter in Florida. After retirement he lived in Manahawkin and then Whiting, NJ. He spent his free time working in his beloved gardens and loved boating and the ocean. He also became a member of the American Legion.
He was a member of Brookdale Baptist Church for many years, and later Manahawkin Baptist Church and Whiting Bible Church. A man of faith, he served in the church, teaching children and helping those in need.
Ray is predeceased by his mother, Maude (Blanks) Mitchell Anastasio, his father, Emzy Mitchell and step-father, Joseph Anastasio. He is also predeceased by 2 brothers, Dennis Mitchell of Seal Beach, California and Alvin Mitchell of Westerville, Ohio and an infant daughter.
Ray is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Edith Pontier Mitchell, his son, David Mitchell and his wife, Maria, and daughter, Colleen Mitchell, 3 grandchildren (Benjamin, Stefanie, Justin), and 1 great grandchild (Luca), and many beloved nieces and nephews. He is also survived by many members of the Mitchell and Blanks family in Texas.
Friends may call on Tuesday, November 14 from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 115 Lacey Rd. Whiting. Funeral Services will be offered on Wednesday at 9:30am from the Whiting Bible Church, 95 Lacey Rd. Whiting. Interment to Include Military Honors will follow at the Brig.Gen.Wm.Doyle.Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 350 Province Line Rd. Wrightstown.
