He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. After his service, Bob returned to Boston, where he was an active member of the Roxbury Presbyterian Church. It was there that he first saw his future bride, Cynthia, in a nurse choir visiting the church. Bob married Cynthia in 1958, and they had 64 wonderful years together. Bob and Cynthia lived briefly in Massachusetts, West Virginia, New York, and Texas, but mostly settled in New Jersey where they spent the majority of their lives.
Bob attended Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. He began his career working as a repairman for Underwood Typewriters in Massachusetts, which was later acquired by Olivetti. He advanced in the company and eventually held different executive positions including Director of Dealer Technical Operations. Bob retired after 46 years with the company.
Bob was very active in both the Presbyterian and Reformed churches wherever he lived. In his early 40’s he began running and eventually ran 18 marathons, including the NY Marathon. At the age of 50, he fulfilled his boyhood dream of running in the Boston Marathon. Later, Bob joined a senior softball league and played well into his 70’s. He frequently acted as an MC for community events at Crestwood Manor, where he lived, sharing corny jokes with his audience, as well as his family whenever they came to visit.
