

Steven Joseph Cortese, 67, passed away on December 9, 2025, in Toms River, New Jersey. Born on July 22, 1958, in Newark, New Jersey, Steven lived a life marked by service, dedication, and a deep love for his family and community.
Steven proudly served his country in the United States Navy, where he earned several commendations including the First Sea Service Ribbon, Second Sea Service Ribbon, Navy Expeditionary Medal, and the Battle “E” Efficiency Award. His time in the Navy instilled in him a lifelong commitment to service and camaraderie.
Following his military service, Steven continued to serve others as a bus driver for the Lyndhurst school system. He took great pride in his work and was known for his reliability and friendly demeanor. His daily interactions with students and staff left a lasting impression on those who came to know him.
Steven’s dedication to community extended beyond his professional life. He was actively involved with the Fire Department and was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. Whether responding to emergencies or participating in local events, Steven was always ready to lend a helping hand.
Those who knew Steven remember him as someone with the biggest heart—always willing to help anyone in need. He had an infectious sense of humor and loved making people laugh. His warmth and generosity touched many lives and created lasting memories for all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Steven is survived by his beloved wife, Allison Cortese; his daughter, Laura Warren; his son, Joseph Cortese; his sister, Susan Gunnello; and his cherished granddaughters, Skyler Warren and Quinn Warren. He also leaves behind two nieces, Michele Gunnello & Denise Gunnello and her husband, Louis Russoniello.
He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Marie Cortese, as well as his sister Edith Cortese and brother-in-law Michael Gunnello.
Visiting hours will be on Monday Dec 15, 2025, from 4-8 pm at Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home 115 Lacey Rd Whiting, NJ
Services will be Tuesday at 11am from the funeral home.
Committal to include military honors will follow at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery, 350 Province Line Rd, Wrightstown, NJ 08562. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully request considering a donation to the American Cancer Society
