Bennie was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother who loved her family with all she had. Her children and grandchildren were her greatest pride, and she made sure they always knew how much they were loved. Bennie had a caring heart and a gentle way of making people feel seen, heard, and important. She gave freely of herself—her time, her love, and her kindness—never expecting anything in return.
She cherished her daily phone calls, weekly lunches with the “Lunch Bunch,” trips to the casino, and playing cards with her dear friends Diane, Jackie, and Kay. Whether through laughter, conversation, or quiet support, Bennie had a gift for bringing people together.
Bennie was a strong woman whose kindness extended to everyone she met. Her compassion, strength, and unconditional love will live on through her family and all those fortunate enough to have known her.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Scott Nelson, her brother, John Burl Downing, and parents Ben and Earlene Downing
She is survived by her children: Laura and husband Kevin Wooster; Pamela and husband Rufus Stegall; David Canada and wife Christie; Dana and husband Jeff Marney; Steve and wife Kari Barton; Judy and husband Brady Duke; and David and wife Nancy Nelson; along with 22 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, and her beloved dog, Nellie.
Bennie will be deeply missed and forever loved.
