Betty Ann Wright Haney, 93, passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2023, in Wichita Falls. She was born on May 15, 1930, in Byers, TX, to Clarence David Wright, Sr. and Margaret Kathleen Lynch Wright.
On September 27, 1947, Betty married Johnnie W. Haney in Byers, TX. During their 71 years of marriage, she was supportive of every endeavor her husband and children set out to achieve. When her children attended Sam Houston Elementary School, Betty was an active member and officer of P.T.A. While her husband was Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star, Betty was Worthy Matron. Accordingly, when Johnnie was a member of Grand Commandery #59, she was a member of the Social Order of Beauceant. During the late 1960’s through 1980, Betty was known as the “Candy Lady” at McClurkan’s in Parker Square. Not only was she supportive of Johnnie’s ministry, but Betty also volunteered with Meals on Wheels in the communities of the churches he served in the North Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church until his retirement in 1991. She encouraged and ensured that Johnnie and her children received their college degrees.
During their retirement years, she and Johnnie enjoyed the many trips they took touring the United States. Although they enjoyed trips to see the fall leaves in the Northeast, a tour of Washington, D.C., and trips to Branson and Nashville, the trips they enjoyed most were those they shared with their grandchildren. Trips to the cabin at Lake Nocona and camping in the motor home or Westfalia at Lake Texoma were only a few they were able to share with their three grandchildren. Skiing and hiking trips to Colorado were always a part of spring and summer breaks; but once their granddaughter moved to Colorado, they always took at least one annual trip to visit. Staying at the family cabin in Estes Park, early morning drives up Trail Ridge or Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain National Park, and attending the Christmas Concert of the Boston Pops in Denver were only a few of their Colorado memories. They were able to travel and attend their granddaughter’s high school, graduate and post graduate commencements. Both will be missed dearly, but the memories of times shared are endless.
Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by sister Dorothy Garrett of Houston, TX, and brother C. D. “Doc” Wright of Wichita Falls, TX.
She is survived by two children, Kenneth L. Haney (T-Ann) of Wichita Falls and Karen H. Bryant (Stan) of Denver, CO; three grandchildren, Blake Haney of Wichita Falls, Matthew Haney (Carolyn) of Austin, TX, Jennifer Bryant of Denver, CO; and three great grandchildren, Abby, Ben, and Millie Haney. She is also survived by one sister, Margie Ligon of Graham, TX, one brother, James Wright (Dorris) of Charlie, TX, and one sister-in-law Dean Wade (Sherrell) of Byers, TX.
She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Hampton Vaughan Crestview Memorial Park. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, September 19, at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Chad A. Stubblefield officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Hampton Vaughan Crestview Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Wichita Falls or Hospice of Wichita Falls.
