Markel, Charles David, 88, retired Millwright of The Boeing Company passed away peacefully on December 20, 2015. He spent his final months under the loving care of the staff at Bickford Cottage in Marion, Iowa who tended to his every need and in his final moments were just as much family to him as any other. Charles was born in Belle Plaine, Kansas on November 10, 1927, to the late Charles Atkin Markel and Lilly Elizabeth (Walter) Markel. He married Mary Ester Baker on May 14th, 1960. He was a caring brother, loving husband, devoted father and wonderful grandfather. He worked at The Boeing Company for over 40 years while still continuing to farm throughout his life, staying true to his roots. He prided himself on his work ethic and ability to skillfully operate heavy machinery and restore and maintain his tractors. He was also a proud member of the International Association of Machinist Local Lodge 839. In his spare moments, he showed his restored Allis-Chalmers tractor in local parades, spent afternoons with his buddies at the VFW Post, attended Polka dances and enjoyed time with his friends from the Wichita, Winfield, Belle Plaine and surrounding areas. Charles loved farming, tending to his garden and tractors and visiting Belle Plaine. Above all else though, he sought out and enjoyed the importance of the role he played in the lives of his family. He adored his grandchildren, Laurel and Joshua Limaye. He also took great joy in being the father of Suzan Limaye and spouse to Mary Markel. He was a confidant, hardworking man of principle with a gentle soul and loving heart. He leaves behind, his loving wife, daughter, son-in-law, grand children, brother Calvin Markel and sister Mary “Betty” Wycoff. He will be truly missed by his family, friends and devoted dog Buddy.
