Howard grew up in south Wichita and graduated from Wichita High School East in 1946. He married the former Betty Jean Emley in 1947. Together they raised three children. He began work for the Derby Refining Company (later Coastal Corporation) in 1945 and retired as chief fleet mechanic after 45 years.
Howard devoted his life to his family, friends and neighbors. He was a loving husband, dedicated father, and proud grandfather and great-grandfather. In addition to his skills as a mechanic, he enjoyed cabinet-making, spending time with his immediate and extended families, neighbors and many friends. He and his wife traveled widely after Howard’s retirement before Betty’s health began to decline and he became her steadfast caregiver during their final decade together.
He is preceded in death by his parents, C.H. "Charlie" and Mary Margaret Duncan, Betty – his loving wife of more than 61 years – and sisters, Caroline Johnson, Mary Margaret Black and Ruth Ann Elmore. He is survived by his three children: Les (Sharon), Pam Todd, and Dan; granddaughters Cindy Todd and Marianne Daniels; grandsons David (Traci), Doug (Kelly) and Mike (Gwen) Duncan; great-grandchildren Bryce, Callum, and Hannah Duncan; and step great-grandson Luc Nolte.
