Esther Wilkins Lucas

Esther W. Lucas, 92 passed away May 26, 2013. She was born in Albany, NY to Dr. Earle and Mildred Wilkins. Esther was the valedictorian and president of the class of 1938 at Albany Academy for Girls in Albany, New York. She then continued her education at Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA, where she majored in Spanish and French and graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in 1942. In 1947 she married Walter Lucas and they moved to Wichita in 1951. She received a teacher certificate from WSU and was a Spanish teacher at Garden Plain High School for 15 years. Esther was a loving sister, mother, and grandmother. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Walter Lucas. Survived by her sons, Stephen Lucas, Gary (Paula) Lucas, daughter, Dana (Vern) Sandlin, brother, Dr. Earle (Suzanne) Wilkins Jr., 5 grandchildren, Brian Sandlin, Rebecca Sandlin, Evan Lucas, Ryan Lucas, Eric Lucas, numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service will be held at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 2:00p.m. Monday, June 10, 2013. In lieu of flowers memorials can be sent to Arthritis Foundation, 1999 N. Amidon Ave. Ste 105 Wichita, KS 67203 or the American Cancer Society.
