
92, was born April 21, 1924 to Ethel and Vard Worstell in Corning, Iowa. She had four older siblings and 4 younger. Helen was both a follower of the older ones and a leader of the younger ones. She graduated from nursing school in Clinton, Iowa in September 1946. Over the years she worked in pediatrics, geriatrics, operating room, general duty and some private duty in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Texas and Kansas. She cared for her mother the last few years of her monther's life. Helen was married to Bill Short for 12 years, she had one son, John William Short. Injuries due to an auto accident led to Bill's passing in 1962. Helen married henry Mitchell Hicks on November, 12, 1966, they were married for forty years before Henry's passing on November 2006, due to a heart attack. The first ten years of their marriage they lived in five places, three states and two countries including Okinawa and Saudia Arabia. Henry's employment brought them to Wichita in 1976, where they lived in the same house for the next 28 years. They moved to Lakepoint when the care of house, garden and lawn was more than they cared to do. Helen loved to garden, she canned, froze and gave away the surplus. Helen was baptized as a Jehovah's Witness on June 13, 1987, one year to the day after her mother died. She attended Derby, Southeast and Linwod Congregations, Helen and Henry enjoyed visiting other congregations. Helen and Henry were members of Riverside Kingdom Hall after moving to Lakepoint. Helen is survived by son, John (Sandra Johnson) Short; brother, Owen Worstell; grandchildren, Kristy Nida and Amy Johnson; and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2016. Graveside service will be held at Resthaven Gardens of Memory on Wednesday, May 24, at 11:00 AM with visitation 1 hour prior.
