At 17, he enlisted in the Air Force. He served for 3 years and thankfully never had to go to war.
In 1970, Connie met Pete and fell in love. She saw in him as a kind soul, a trustworthy soul. One that would protect and truly do everything for the ones he loved.
Connie’s own words:
“He was my love story. I knew that when I met him, he was a GOOD MAN – honest and trustworthy – his word was SOUND! We truly enjoyed spending time together: hunting, target shooting, water skiing, camping – he loved life and loved spending time with his family! He will forever be my love and my friend!! He taught me well!!!”
He loved his mother, Walterine, known as Renea or “Grannie”. She was cared for unconditionally by Pete. They had a bond that all sons and mothers would desire!
His father, Willis, taught him how to be a man and learned the trade of mechanic work. They shared time together hunting.
Pete’s only sister, Katherine, “Kitter”as Pete called her, was his little sister. They loved one another. Pete loved his 3 nieces, Beth, Lea and Kelly. Pete passed away on Katherine’s “Kat” birthday!!
Cecil was his only son. They never got to really know each other but once they connected with one another, there was love and a bond!
Pete was blessed with a close friend, Leroy. They knew they had a friendship that many never experience: they spent time working and hunting together. “Boots are like friends – the longer you have ‘em the better they get”!!
Eugene and Stasha, Connie’s children, called him Poppa.
Eugene’s own words:
“I’m glad Poppa let us be kids! We would wander off into the woods, did not shelter or coddle us. He was REAL, an old soul in his own ways, not intimidated by anyone. He disciplined us when we needed it. He respected my mother and loved her beyond measure. He had a great sense of humor. We knew he loved us 3 and will be missed immensely!”
Eugene gave one of his sons, Dallas Eugene Odell Huntington his middle name, to show honor and the love they had for Poppa.
Stasha’s own words:
“I was taught how to be a lady! Poppa and I had a bond! When I was little, they took us to a carnival and I saw a bear. Poppa kept on trying to win the “prize” – way too much $ later, he won the bear for me. When I was a teenager, he completely rewired my first car – which everyone encouraged him not to purchase. I loved him and respected him so much that Gene, my husband and I gave our son, Hunter Odell Rondeau his middle name.”
He loved the Dallas Cowboys, an avid golfer, enjoyed watching boxing, riding motorcycles “Harley’s” and hunting at the deer lease. He was not a lover of chicken (Dallas and Christy Reaves know that first hand)!
We are forever better because of Pete! His lessons of life will forever help us remember how to be REAL and KIND!!
