I just learned today of Lan's passing and wanted to express my sincere condolences to her family.  She was a brilliant physician, and I enjoyed vising with her.  She took very good care of me and my husband in Manhattan. God Bless you all.

You are so accepting of who you are yet you’re never afraid of achieving more. You always strive to be better. You never settled for less. You work hard to be a better person, physician, mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend etc. You set a high standard for yourself and wanted us to also set high standards for ourselves as well. You always wish the best for all of us. You have this warm, radiant, happy, friendly and cheerful demure that attracts all of us to you and make us all just love you.  

Thank you for always cheering us all on our own journeys in life and never hesitating to check in on us. You truly make us feel like we matter in the moments we spend with you. Thank you for always being so generous and being such a beautiful person inside and out.

You are someone who truly does live your life to the fullest. You have always lived in the present moment, not letting life pass you by. Even when you had a short amount of time left with us, you always took the time to take care of us. I hope you know how much we love you. I hope you know how much you mean to us. Thank you for all the joy you have brought into our lives. You will be truly missed Lan. Rest in peace. I hope you are now eating to your heart’s content. I am glad you are no longer in pain. Happy Mother’s Day Lan. I have been thinking about you a lot lately, especially today. Seeing you with Micah, I can see how much you enjoy being his mother. I see how happy you are when you are with him. I hope you will continue to shower him with your love from Heaven and cheer him on, celebrating his milestones as he continues to grow as a person. 

I have put in a lot of thought into writing this, but writing down my thoughts and expressing my feelings have been difficult. Even though I am not eloquent, I know that you would be understanding of my struggles towards writing this. 

Even though we were both from Wichita, I didn’t get the opportunity to get to know you as much as I would like. You studied at WSU while I was at KU. Eventually we were in the same place at the same time when I briefly moved back to Wichita. However, our lives were always occupied, and timing never seemed to line up. You were busy with residency while I was busy studying for my nursing boards and learning to be a brand new nurse. 

With that said, I have always enjoyed the time I have spent with you. Most of those moments were through other people. I met you for the first time through Thanh, and grew to know you even more through Allen. I was always happy to see you at the get togethers he would plan. I also got to know you more and more when my youngest sister Linda started dating Giang, your brother and now my brother in law.

I have always loved and admired you. I love the quiet confidence you had in yourself. You are someone who knows what she wants and was not afraid to go and get it. I loved that you had the courage to reach your dreams and made realistic plans for the future in being a physician and being a loving mother.

Lan was a beautiful person in so many ways. Everyone who knew her loved her. I never once heard her speak unkindly of anyone. She was such an includer and supporter of those around her. She valued community and was a gracious hostess to many with dinners and parties at her home. She had an incredible laugh. She was always thinking of others. Even at one of her sickest points, she sent a gift for my newborn baby. She was an incredibly wise and caring physician. She had a gift for teaching and sharing her knowledge without ever making others feel inferior. She encouraged so many (including me) in their healthcare careers. She celebrated others genuinely and generously. All my big life events (wedding, first home, new babies) include memories of caring visits and gifts from Lan. Her sense of style was impeccable; always classy with a little bit of sassy. She was a one-of-a-kind and all around lovely person. 

Micah, your mom meant so much to so many. She loved you dearly. I hope these descriptions and memories from others help paint a picture for you of the wonderful person she was. And I know your amazing daddy will help to do that for you too. I wish you could have known her for longer. But I know a piece of her lives in you, and she will be with you always.

Lan, my younger sister was a staunch supporter of healthcare for the local community. 

At some point I thought I wanted to be a physician with dreams of helping with “Doctors Without Borders “. Lan asked me why when there were so many people locally that need the care. 

Some years later we were talking about insurance compensation and how though she knew many other practitioners stopped accepting a certain company, she still did because if she didn’t then how were these patients going to find help. 

In my work today I think of these times and  I try to mirror these sentiments. Lan, you were definitely an inspiration for me.

I’ll never forget the time Lan took me to meet with Dr. Talaty in order to get some help with organic chemistry. She was excited to see her favorite professor and without hesitation offered to take me to meet him. She patiently waited a good hour and was very supportive. Dr. Talaty always had a saying “Thank my lucky stars”.

Thank our lucky stars to have known and met such a wonderful person.

P. S. Micah, your mom was also had a sense of humor, she once suggested I tell all her attendings we were related as I rotated through her family medicine program.

During our Vail trip we talked about how girls’ “Roman Empire” are the friendships they miss. Lan and I both expressed how we wish we would have reconnected sooner. Now that you are gone, Lan, I mourn the friendship that could have flourished. As I write this, my own daughter is learning the difficult art of choosing the right friends: the ones that build you up, that celebrate your success, the ones that hold you accountable and the ones that have your back. All of this reminds me how rare it is to encounter a friend like Lan in your lifetime. How lucky we were to have called her friend. The attention and care she gave to her friendships is what I aspire to and what I want to teach my daughter. She was so many things to so many people and she will be so missed.

To Micah: We share an unimaginable trauma. We both lost a parent to cancer at a young age. I spent all the stages of my life searching for who my father was, how I could know him better, yearning for stories about him and for people to tell me what attributes he passed down to me. You will have a trove of stories to show you how bright your mom’s presence was, how big her heart was, how brilliant her mind was and how strong her spirit was. She loved you in the deepest way. She understood better than all of us to treasure life, to love big and leave a mark on all that cross your path. I know her star shines through you and you too will go on to do big things.

To Thanh: We all talk about how Lan’s star has always been bright since her youth, but when she was with you, she truly had all the glitz and glam. I’ve always known Lan to be confident and sure of herself and after you there was no doubt. For all the devotion she gave to others in her life, you also made space for and honored that part of her. It seemed you saw how much she gave to others and you matched that with the devotion and adoration you gave back to her. Thank you for loving her so deeply.

When I first met Co Lan, I was intimidated cause everyone spoke so highly of her, and I worried I wouldn’t measure up. But she quickly proved me wrong, welcoming me with open arms as if I were family. That was just who she was: kind, perceptive, and effortlessly generous. Someone who made people feel valued without hesitation.

Even though we mostly saw each other on holidays, she made every moment feel warm and meaningful. She had a way of making those moments special. She remembered the little things, always picking up right where we left off. I’ll always cherish how even in a room full of people, she made sure no one was overlooked.

Co Lan had a gift for making people feel seen. When I struggled with uncertainty about my future, she supported me without judgment. When Kim and I bought our home, she celebrated with us. And when I confided in her about my ADHD, her understanding and advice meant more than she may have realized.

I’ll miss her deeply. Her warmth, her wisdom, and the way she made even outsiders like me feel like they belonged. My heart goes out to all who loved her, because I know how much light she brought into this world.

Dr. Ly-spelled L-Y, she would have to tell all the nurses- was my senior resident when I started residency. She was a year ahead of me, and from day one, she set the tone as the kind of doctor patients wanted to see. I remember her always having a calm, upbeat energy-even during the most exhausting 24-hour call shifts. She had this nurturing, “mama bear” presence that made every new intern feel safe and supported, no matter how overwhelming the work became.

We spent countless nights together admitting patients, managing laboring moms, fielding overnight pages, and caring for our full census of inpatients and clinic patients. It was during that whirlwind of learning and exhaustion that I saw what made Lan special. She didn’t just teach by instruction-she led by example, always kind, always composed, and always looking out for her team.

She was brilliant, but never made others feel small. She was fun, too-the kind of person who greeted you with a genuine smile, even at 2 a.m., and who showed the same empathy toward her colleagues as she did her patients. I’ll never forget one night on call, she casually mentioned that Dr. Moussa, one of our favorite nephrologists, had told her she was the best resident he’d ever worked with. She smiled when she said it-not with pride, but with quiet gratitude. It wasn’t a boast. For Lan, recognition wasn’t about ego. It was about honoring the work-steady, selfless, often unseen. That moment didn’t change her. It simply affirmed who she already was.

Lan was a cherished friend and colleague, and her passing is a heartbreaking loss-to me personally and to the entire Family Medicine community.

I first met Lan Ly in medical school, where we were both part of the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG). Even then, I looked up to her. She had this quiet confidence, a brilliant mind, and a way of making you feel like you mattered. Our paths continued to cross, and I can say  that Lan was a huge reason I chose Wesley Family Medicine over Via Christi. We bonded over our shared sense of humor, our love for family medicine, and our mutual understanding that OB GYN wasn’t for us-we knew it, and we joked about it every time we were on call together, doing everything we could to avoid it.

We were very similar in how we approached patient care, and it always felt like we were on the same wavelength. We were also both on Yellow Team—the best team, hands down—so I got to spend a lot of clinic time learning from her, laughing with her, and witnessing firsthand her incredible dedication to her patients and colleagues.

Lan wasn't just smart—she was wise, supportive, and quietly fierce. She encouraged me to apply for chief resident, believing in me when I didn’t fully believe in myself yet. That’s who she was. . Her support wasn't performative—it was rooted in genuine care and loyalty.

Even after graduation, our paths continued to intersect—running into each other randomly in Manhattan, Kansas, or at Barnes & Noble in Wichita. Every time we talked, it felt meaningful. She was always quick to mention Micah, and any time she talked about him she beamed. The joy, the pride, the love—it radiated from her.

One of the greatest honors of my life was when Lan asked me to be her primary care physician when she moved back to Wichita. I was humbled beyond words. Though my role was small in the grand scheme of her care, that request, and that one visit meant the world to me. To be part of her journey in that way, even amid so many specialists, was a privilege I will always carry with me.  

She is so deeply missed! I'm sure she's up there in charge, and organizing heaven already. :)

I am so heartbroken to learn of your passing Lan, and I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to be there to say good bye! The world feels a little less bright without you. I'll never forget our times together at work and outside . You were such a kind and generous person, and I always admired your strength and resilience. May your beautiful soul Rest easy Lan!

I loved seeing Lan as a mom! She was a natural, so in her element. She guided and loved Micah so well. That love goes on.

I always appreciated Lan’s warm smile. She was fun and upbeat. It was always good to be around her.

Lan always had a level head on her shoulders. During residency, Lan was always calm and accepted challenges with a positive attitude. As a senior resident, she always taught with enthusiasm and without judgement. She was kind and nice to everyone - other residents, nurses, patients, etc.  She was hardworking and a great role model to those of us who were her junior residents. 

I think what I would want her son to know is Lan is the kind of person who left a lasting impression of happiness, contentment, kindness, and hard work ethic.  Even years after last seeing her she is still a great role model in my heart.

I’ve known Lan since 6th grade, and from the very beginning, I knew she was special. Just a few days after I transferred into her school, it was time for group pictures. I hadn’t signed up in time, but Lan-who barely knew me then-invited me to be in her group photo. The teacher wouldn’t allow it, but that small gesture stuck with me forever. That was Lan: open-hearted, inclusive, and kind beyond measure.

To Micah: I hope you always remember how deeply your mom loved you. You lit up her world. You were her miracle and her greatest joy. She went through so much to have you, and she would have done it all over again in a heartbeat. When she found out she was sick, she fought with everything she had-for you.

Lan, thank you for being a shining example of love, strength, compassion, and joy. I miss you more than words can say. The world is dimmer without you, but those of us who were lucky enough to know you carry your light with us always.

Remembering Lan: A Light in All Our Lives
Lan was, simply put, the best human I’ve ever known. She radiated a kind of love and care that could only come from someone deeply, genuinely good. Whether you were family, a friend, a patient, or even a stranger-if you crossed paths with Lan, you felt her kindness. It wasn’t performative or forced. It was who she was.
As a doctor, Lan had an incredible gift. She knew everything about the disease process and always stayed sharp, but she never used her intelligence to make others feel small. So many of us turned to her with medical concerns-late-night texts, casual questions-and she always made time to help. Patient, thoughtful, and thorough, she made sure we felt cared for, not just informed. Her patients weren’t just charts or diagnoses; they were people she treated with the same compassion she gave to everyone in her life.
Lan was fiercely determined. If she set her mind to something, there was no stopping her. Not only would she achieve her goals, but she’d surpass them. She never did anything halfway. And she poured that same heart and soul into her greatest dream: being a mother.
Lan was the best mom to Micah. Her love for him was so deep, so radiant-it showed in everything she did. Even when she was tired, sick, and drained from her treatments, she still made Micah’s Pokémon Valentine’s Day box and showed up at his preschool party. She didn’t let anything stop her from showing up for him. He was her whole world.
Lan was also hilarious-without even trying to be. Her laugh was the kind that filled the room and then took it over. She would laugh so hard she cried, or her stomach would hurt, or she’d end up rolling on the floor. And when she was scared, like when a needle came near her, her fear turned into uncontrollable laughter. You couldn’t help but laugh with her.

Lan was an amazing person, mother, wife, and friend. I remember we were able to hang out when she still lived in Manhattan. Most of the time we hung out it would be couples events and they would be so much fun. I think one of the funniest memories I had was when she played Ring of Fire at her house for the first time and we all probably had too much fun that night. I know she is looking down on us now and we are all blessed to have had her in our lives. My condolences to Lan's family and thank you for letting us be a part of your lives

Thank you for being a wonderful friend. I will always remember how you pushed me to be better when we were younger and willing to help me with anything school related. I was blessed to have known you in this lifetime.  I am grateful we became friends in HS and then made so many memories in our 20s. I’ve missed those date nights we would have to just catch up. I know in our 30s we were busy with life and didn’t see each other often, but I did always think of you. You were one of the good ones. I will always cherish our friendship and will miss you dearly.

There are really no words to express the grief and sadness of your passing. I feel so blessed to have been able to work alongside you and learn from an extremely passionate physician. In addition to working with you, I am so grateful to have had your friendship. I wish we could have spent more time together but the memories I do have will be cherished forever. It was obvious that you gave 100% in everything you did, from relationships, to motherhood, to your patient care. I can’t even tell you how much your patients respect you and will miss your “small but mighty” approach. I hope to be half the provider that you were.  While I can’t understand why things like this happen to wonderful people, I know that you will continue looking down on us all, a true angel in Heaven. You and Tip have raised an amazing little boy, Micah is so sweet and I can tell he is going to be so smart, just like his amazing mom. I know Tip will continue to keep your memory alive, and while Micah may not have you here physically, you will always be there with him. I will miss you my dear friend, I hope you are resting in everlasting peace and tranquility.

When my family (Bác Thuận’s Family) came to America, Co Thanh ( Lan’s mom) and her family welcomed and was there for us, helping us navigate new life in Wichita, KS. I remember play days and it was my favorite memory of going over to Co Thanh’s house to play. Coming from a family of 7 girls we were traumatized of Binh and Giang lol because they were of course being BOYS.. unruly. Lan was just the sweetest with the biggest smile. As we grew up of course we didn’t get to be close as much but whenever we see you, you were always so cheerful and full of life. You had the kind of smile that makes others smiled with you. My best last
memory will be at your brother Giang’s wedding. We talked as though no time had passed between us. You had a natural charm in you that makes people feel so connected. Love you cousin, always in our memory.

I was not fortunate enough to know Lan personally, which, I consider a great loss of mine.  In knowing her brother, I read about her life, and know for certain I’d have loved her.  The love and passion she had for those around her and helping others seemed to be the kind that makes everyone’s life better.  I’m certain her loss is leaving holes in the lives of everyone she knew.  She had the kind of personality that everyone would be drawn to; positive, hard-working, loving, caring, and full of life.  I am sure the lives of everyone she knew we were blessed and better for having her in them.  What a beautiful woman she was, and what a loss we have in her passing.  Love and prayers to all her family and loved ones during this time.

Lan you were always the most positive and caring person I know. I m so lucky to have gotten to know you and to have been there at some big moments of you and Thanh’s lives. We are all better having known you and the influences you have had in our lives. I miss you friend but a part of you is with Micah and know all your loved ones will be there for him and Thanh. One day we’ll get more food together and hang out again. Smiles until the end.

Hi Lan,

Since I last shared my speech, you said it’s a ‘work in progress ‘ so I’ve been working on it. You basically raised me during my primary years; the parents were always at work or at school. 

I remember when you would take me everywhere with you and everyone thought I was your daughter. You even took me to work at Dr. Kieu’s dental office and i would just be hanging with your coworkers. That’s why I ended up working there later. 

I remember you would always get me Trident tropical twist flavored chewing gum because that was your favorite flavor. Every time you came home to visit from med school, you would leave me a pack.  You left a note if I was at school and didn’t get to see you. 

You were always there for your siblings. Whenever i needed a physical for school, you would do it without hesitation. Or like the time you took me to get my ears pierced - without mom knowing. 

You were actually the princess of the family and would boss us around; getting the princess treatment. When you were in residency I ironed your clothes for work the night before and massaged your knots. I miss your bossiness.

You were only allowed to have me as your little sister; just me. So when I saw a picture of you with a little girl, a distant relative in Houston; when I was five, I was annoyed. You asked if I was jealous but I said ‘No’ of course. But you knew I was and how I love you.

I had tried to enter the military multiple times and was upset it did not work out. But it was this misfortune that allowed me to have more time with you. You consoled me but at the same time urged me to move past it. 

I will miss your constructive criticism and your encouragement. I will miss the way you spoiled and the way you loved me. I will miss my only sister. I’ll always love you, Lan

Lan was our beautiful, vibrant neighbor for a very short time in Manhattan.  Her smile made you smile when you saw her.  John and I loved watching Lan and Tip play outside with Micah as he was filled with joy playing with his toys in the driveway!  We miss watching your happy family next door.  Lan will forever be in our hearts and so missed by all of us on Stratford Drive.

Lan, with how you lived your life, full of servitude and compassion, it's evident God has called you to join him in his kingdom. Though we take solace in knowing that you are resting in heaven, there is an immense lost that we all feel. I will miss you as a dear friend and also as a role model. You've shown us all by example what is possible for all of us. You've shown what it is to love with one's whole self and to make all around you feel seen. You've shown what can be achieved with dedication and unwaivering faith. We will all carry forward in this life with you as a shining example.

As much as this makes you sound like an angel living amongst us all along, you couldn't have been, right? Come to think of it why were you the only one in a white jacket when everyone else's was black. Nah, you were too goofy to be a divine being. I remember hearing you curse the choking Chiefs with a trời ơi! I remember the time you laughed your ass off at having forgotten about Thanh's close encounter with cancer. I remember you setting me up with Thuy while I was on a mission of celebacy. I remember you watching unsavory Tyler Perry shows. For those things, I'm glad you went to confessional your last week on Earth. And for those reasons, I'm about 50% sure you weren't angel among us all along.

She would always stop by Panera to get us a couple of her favorite drink the Icy Caramel. During this time we’d always be able to spend one on one time with each other and talk about anything. This is my most cherished memory of Lan.

I knew Lan was always a call or a text away and I would confide in her whenever I needed to. Somehow she would always be there to help me in my darkest hour. It’s hard to see a world without my big sister there to help guide me along.

Recently, I asked her if there was any message she’d like to share with the world. She said ‘she wants everyone to live for her. Live life to the fullest and do not take anything for granted.’ Lan, I will always miss you, I will think about you, and I will always love you. I hope you’re resting peacefully now in heaven and I will see you when I see you. (2/2)

For those who do not know me, my name is Giang and I am Lan’s younger brother by about 2 and a half years. Lan has always been one of the brightest and most influential person in my life. She was always the glue in the family and I would like to take some time today to share a few of my favorite memories I have with Lan during our time together.

Back in Elementary school, our parents would give us monetary rewards based on our grades. Lan would always get perfect marks while mine weren’t as great so she would always get the money. At the school, there is a Dillons supermarket across the street, and after school, Lan would walk me over and buy candy for her and me with her money. This goes to show just how caring and generous Lan was.

Joyland was one of our favorite places to attend when we were younger. We’d always ride the train first and then move on to more extreme things like the haunted house. My sister was truly fearless, she persuaded me to ride the roller coaster for the first time together. Somehow we ended up laying on our backs looking up at the sky while the ride proceeded. I am pretty sure we were too small for that ride at the time. How times have changed.

Transitioning to Middle school, Lan always had a group of friends she hung out with. Lan was in 8th grade while I was a 6th grader and whenever I passed by any of her friends, they’d say “hi Lan’s brother” and made me feel truly happy to be Lan’s brother. Lan was so well known and respected by each of her friends and peers. Looking into the attendees today, I am happy and grateful to see so many familiar faces from that group.

My favorite time with Lan was when she would drive me to High school in the morning. It was almost like a ritual, we’d get in the car and always have this CD that would loop on repeat. I remember the song list included Natalie Goin’ Crazy and Nelly Furtado Say It Right. (1/2)

Words cannot express the love and appreciation I have for you. Sometimes it feels surreal that you're actually gone, but when I fully realize it, the pain hits me, and I'm heartbroken all over again.

Lan, thank you for sharing a part of your life with me. It was not only a privilege to grow with you, but it was also a pleasure to watch you achieve your dreams. You truly lived your life to the fullest. Your legacy will continue through your family, especially Micah. The love and bond you two shared were evident. You and Thanh brought light into this world that will help not only heal Thanh but also your family and friends. He lights up a room when he walks in, just like you did.

I'll miss you and love you always, my friend. Get the much-deserved rest, enjoy that coffee, the food, and all the K-dramas.

Also, when I was little, my mom said you were the only person that I would let hold my hand. Don't worry about Micah, Emma and I will help take care of him and play with him.

Lan and I used to randomly call each other just to see how we were doing. Usually, it was a quick hey how’s it going? Just to make sure we were there. 
She never hesitated being our cheerleader. School was not my strong suit and sometimes I struggled.  Lan always assured me that I was smart; though not as smart as she. She called me every now and then to tell me to study. 
Each time that I was leaving to go away for school, she wrote me a greeting card to boost my self-esteem. But to also remind me the path it would take to get to the Finish. Lan loved writing those long greeting cards. She always poured her emotions out to us and there was always a tear jerker moment. 
She was so dedicated to all of us and has touched us in some way. 
Her loss is a big one for us.
I will miss the times we sat there talking about nothing;
the times I texted you a picture of something you might like;
the times I texted you a picture of my swollen foot or a rash to see what you thought;
I will miss the times we won’t have. 
I am truly grateful for all the encouragement you gave me; the criticisms; 
I have lost a sister, a best friend,  my confidante.

Lan was my younger sister, my Irish twin. There is a period of about three weeks each year when we are the same age. And she reminded me each time. We grew up sharing a lot of milestones. We shared our first ER visit together.
When we were three or four we decided to get healthy by taking our vitamins. Turns out if you split a whole bottle of Flintstones vitamins you go to the ER and drink ipecac syrup. Evidently this experience did not deter Lan from pursuing medicine. When we were in preschool she always dressed up as a doctor during playtime and well I just wanted to be a ninja turtle. 
We somehow keep getting involved in these misadventures.
Like the time Lan got her colorful bow flip flop stuck in an escalator and broke it down at Towne East. I was scarred by that and was afraid to ride the escalator for some time. 
Honestly I still am a bit scared to ride the escalator.
When we started at a new elementary school I was so excited to have come across her in the cafeteria; I went over to talk to her. I unknowingly poured my chocolate milk down her back as I leaned over to talk. 
In high school Lan asked me to record her in an Indian Dance she did with friends. They worked so hard practicing for it. Turns out she wanted a video of the entire group dancing not just her. 
In college Lan was invited to join the Mortar Board Society; which she would have, if I had not left the mail in my room and forgot about it. 
Good thing she got to her KU Med School Acceptance Letter before I got to it 
Lan loved her gatherings. Any occasion was open for a party. Sporting events, Birthdays and holidays were some of her favorite things. Fourth of July barbeques; Thanksgiving dinners;  She always made us wait until midnight on Christmas Eve to open presents.
There were many times us siblings found ourselves just vegging out on the living room sofa watching TV. We were not watching anything in particular but Lan just enjoyed the fact we were all together.

Lan was one of the kindest and most generous people I knew. The world is less of a place without her, but I know she will live on in our hearts and memories.

I would say Lan was one of the most nhiệt tình (enthusiastic/eager) people I knew. Whenever I mentioned wanting to eat something or just saying how I enjoyed a previous item she prepared, she'd on the spot make it for me. Or when I didn't know if I had the courage to change my hair color, she'd be so excited and tell me how I should and that amount of courage was all I needed and her brother Doan colored it for me the same night. She even curled it right after. I will miss her a lot and go for it attitude.

Words simply can not express all the emotions that come with the loss of Lan. My heart aches deeply for you, your family, friends, and for the loss of your gentle and caring presence in this world. It was an honor to know you and a privilege to be called a colleague and friend of yours. I will forever remember your quiet strength, humility, and selfless giving nature. It is quite clear God has huge plans for you and needed you in heaven. Thank you Lan for all you have done in this life and all the amazing things you will continue to do in heaven. I had the privilege of interacting with Lan when she recruited me to be a part of a couple of dance routines for the Vietnamese Student Association, where she was the president at the time. I will always remember her bright cheery aura and natural leadership. My heart is heavy knowing she had to leave this world so soon. I will keep her family in my prayers during this very difficult time.

Lan, to have known you was to love you. Becoming your friend, I didn’t know how much of a presence you would be in my life. From being in each other’s weddings, the many girls trips, you and Thanh becoming Godparents to Chloe, you were there. I’ll always remember the notes that we wrote to each other in middle school and  how they always ended with LYLAS. We didn’t see each other much through high school and college, yet anytime we talked we would pick right back up where we left off. Our last heart to heart where we both cried together will mean so much to me. You always knew what to say and your compassion was a gift. I’m so thankful for our friendship and will cherish it deeply. Chloe will continue to pray for you, her Godmother, daily. Don’t worry, the girls and I will continue our girls trips because we know you’ll be there with us too. Your story lives on and I’ll see you again. LYLAS

Lan, I am so lucky to have had you as a sister. Before you left, I read to you my eulogy because I wanted you to know how much you meant to me and my upbringing. You are so important to me and want to make sure Micah knows this as well, so I’m including it in the book:

“Hello, my name is Doan and I am Lan’s youngest brother. 

Thank you, everyone, for being here today so that my sister could be surrounded by all of her friends and family, I wish she could see how many people loved and cared for her. 

Everyone here has some sort of idea of who Lan was as a person in their life. She was a friend, niece, aunt, sister, daughter, and a mom. I’m here to tell you who she was as my older sister. 

I’ve known her for all of my life. I became attached pretty quickly, and had even left a mark on the side of her arm when I was a baby. Growing up, she would be the one babysitting me while our parents were at work. When our little sister was born, I wasn’t the baby anymore. Feeling jealous and neglected, I sat alone on the floor in my parents room. But Lan, she comes and asks me what I’m doing alone, and invites me to hang out in her room. She never left me alone. She was the most caring and selfless person I know. When I was in high school, I ended up doing poorly on an exam and was lectured by my mom. Lan’s room was right underneath my parents room, so she could hear the commotion. I went to my room upset but Lan came upstairs to see what was wrong. I started crying because I was frustrated about my exam score despite ace-ing all of my assignments and quizzes. I could tell how much empathy Lan had when she started crying with me. I looked up to her because she was also very strong and independent. She made a name for herself, surviving medical school, and found a very loving husband.” (1/2)

“During my sophomore year in college, I was living with Lan and Thanh to help watch their new puppy. One time, there was one thing Lan had said to Thanh that really stuck with me. She said, “if my siblings didn’t like you, I don’t know if I could have married you.” I found out that day how much she valued her family and knew that once she started her own family, she would place them before anyone else. Lan was full of love—however, we didn’t openly express it in my family and that is one thing I regret growing up. The first memory I have after crashing my car on the highway was Lan running over to me to give me a hug. She said, “oh, Thank God.” I was lucky to come out unscathed, but more lucky to have had Lan in my life. In her last months, we were lucky to have the time to spend with her as every minute counted. Our heart-to-heart conversations were so precious. One thing  she wanted to make sure was that we spoiled Micah, her son, but not too much. I did not see her love waver from the way she interacted with Micah. I saw how much she wanted to watch him grow up and it broke my heart. Another thing she mentioned was not to forget and neglect Thanh and to love him with the same amount of love that I had for her. She taught me how to express love. She accepted me with open arms when I finally decided to come out, teaching me how to love myself. She’s taught me so many life lessons and I believe we can all agree that her impact has shaped who we’ve become today. I feel sorry that I took it for granted. I miss you so much, Lan. You took care of me on earth, and I know you’ll be looking out for me up in Heaven.

As her youngest brother, thank you all again for showing up and being in her life. Please continue to cherish Lan in your memories.” (2/2)

Lan, I was nervous when we first met. Doan had told me his relationship with me was contingent upon his siblings approval of me - especially your approval. But from the moment we met, even with your probing inquisitions to see if I measured up and was worthy of being your little brother’s partner, I felt at ease with you. You wholeheartedly embraced me as a member of the family. I will forever be grateful for your acceptance of me and your loving support of Doan and I’s relationship. Doan’s love and respect for you was always clear to me. I came to share the same love and respect for you.

I will always think of you when I am watching KDramas. I have you to thank for introducing me to a genre that has been so delightful for me. Ever since I binge-watched Queenmaker with you and Doan, I have become obsessed with KDramas. I’ll miss the opportunities to share which KDramas we are both currently watching and our opinions of them.

I mourn your loss as I thought we would have more time with you. But I am joyful that I was able to share a few years with you and get to know the beautiful soul you are.

They say the true measure of a person’s of a worth is in the number of lives they touched in a positive way.  If this is true, then Lan your life was immeasurable.  You had a knack for bringing out the best in people.  No where ,more so than in my good friend Thanh.  You were able to make him grow into the amazing husband, father, and man he is today.  I remember visiting your house for Halloween  and witnessing the  warmth, kindness, and intelligence you filled that beautiful house with.   I’ll always hold Thanh and Micah in my prayers.

Lan took great care of Emily and Lilly growing up and each time my family came to visit her and Thanh in Manhattan or Wichita for a day/weekend trip Lan always did such a great job hosting us and making sure we had a great time. I’m also so glad to spend holidays together and you always gave such thoughtful gifts that I will remember always.

Co Lan, 
I can’t think of a single moment in my life where you haven’t been there to show support for me. When I look back at my childhood, I remember the times you would go out of your way to spend time with me and my sister, to taking me out to eat at Fritz, ice skating or getting dessert to even a year ago when I graduated. I remember when I found out you were pregnant because I knew you would be an amazing mother. My childhood was filled with amazing memories because of you and for that I’ll always be thankful. 

Co Lan is someone I’ll always cherish. She always made sure to check up on me every time I saw her and as someone who is shy, I didn’t feel scared to talk to her. Since, I’ve graduated from college she gave me a lot of advice something I’ll hold close to my heart. 

Thank you for everything Co Lan.

Có Lan has always been warm and kind. I remember spending Christmas with Có Lan and how welcoming she was. Anytime Emily and I would visit it would feel like we were home. Có Lan always put others above herself and even in sickness would take care of her family and raise her child with grace and strength. She was a brave woman who loved and was loved by her family deeply. She will be missed greatly and her family will cherish her memory forever. Rest easy Có Lan, we love you.

Micah: 

I’m sure you will read all of these lovely odes to your mom one of these days and I bet you will find a common theme: she was everything! Kind and gentle, ornery and comical in the right setting, brave and strong no matter what life threw her way. I am so lucky to call her a dear friend! 

You will find glimpses of her all around you:
In the calm of a warm summer day, soaking up the sunshine 
When a random stranger does something kind for you on a tough day 
In the storms that life throws your way, where despite the chaos, you feel peace 

And your dad will find pieces of her in YOU! 
When you accomplish something you worked hard for 
When you laugh and scrunch up your nose at something silly 
When you go out of your way to help others 
When you find your love for coffee… maybe! 

But don’t be afraid to go after a goal and fall short, or to make mistakes and learn from them. I just know your mom would be just as proud of your missteps, effort, and adventures along the way! 

You are deeply and endlessly loved. We are mourning with you and your family today, but we will rejoice endlessly in your mom finding peace and being a guiding angel for us all.

I remember when we would always play games like Sabotage which is a game where we’d have to make boba drinks using cards that can also be use to sabotage other players. We were both pretty good at this game and I’m so glad we found it at that boba tea place because playing it together almost every night in the summer (2024) was so fun. If I could describe her, I would say smart, pretty, and so brave. I’m so glad to have been able to spend my childhood with her.

I love you Co Lan!

To me, Co Lan was someone who I had the pleasure to grow up with, and some of my earliest memories will always have her in the background of them. I remember she tried teaching me how to ice skate and made sure to hold on to me the entire time so that I never fell. I was a really shy kid growing up, and even now, but I was so scared to fall, and she knew instantly how I was feeling without me expressing it in words. She's always had such a kind heart, and it was always apparent even when I stayed at her house during my freshman year of college.  I enjoyed talking to her during dinners and watching together some K-pop music videos while Micah played in the distance. I always look fondly on that first year, and having this family always so close to me when it was my first time away from home made my journey into adulthood so much easier, and for that I will always be grateful.

Thank you Lan for being you...such a kind a kind and genuine soul. I will always remember your bright smile, forever brave & positive attitude, and the love for your family. Rest easy my friend.

I have always been more of an introvert, so I was nervous to meet Giang’s family. It turns out that I didn’t need to worry about that because Lan made me feel so welcomed to the family from the beginning. 

My favorite memory of Lan was during New Year’s Eve 2018. She was always great at planning get-togethers at her home in Manhattan. Lan decided to host a black-tie event with our own mini photo booth. We even had a little dance club in Van’s room. 

When Giang and I found out that we were expecting Skylar, she was so excited for us. I could really sense her sincerity because she was such a loving mother to Micah. She spoiled Skylar with gifts and visited often to make sure Sky knew of her presence. I’m truly thankful that she was a part of my life. I know you will continue to watch over us in Heaven. I love you, Lan.

I will always remember your kindness, patience, and gentle smile. From helping me with my school interviews to offering life advice, you were always so willing to help and give to others. Even though I wish you were still here with us, I know you're in a better place. I will forever cherish the memories we shared. Rest easy.

You’ll always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Lan had the brightest smile and the sweetest soul. Thank you for bringing the A Team together during med school and beyond. We'll never forget that time when the REAL grand affair started in the club after the grand affair or when our kids loved your "unicorn" cookies you and Thanh bought. Her spirit lives on in the love she gave and the lives she touched. Thank you for your kindness, love and light you have spread on us.

My deepest sympathy to you all! Lan was the most positive, strong, kind and courageous woman! She loved deep! Her kindness was unmatched! She was brilliant and beautiful! May you find peace and comfort in your Faith, Family, Friends, and memories! My prayers are with you all!

I'll always remember how much you loved getting your hair done by me during our appointments. The way your face lit up afterward. It was our “me”  time, and through it, we really bonded. We laughed, talked, and shared so much.  I'll never forget the joy and happiness you brought into my life. You were so strong, even in the hardest times, and I feel grateful to have been part of those small but special moments with you. I miss you and will carry those memories with me always. 

This was our last appointment together. She gathered all her strength just to come see me, not knowing it would be the last time. That moment will stay with me forever.

Lan was a wonderful colleague.  I enjoyed her wisdom, humor and all around optimism she shared.  She was very giving of herself and it showed in the compassion she had towards others no matter if they were patients, fellow staff members, family, etc.  I will miss her but carry her smile with me always.  I pray that her spirit and love remains in your hearts for eternity.

You were always so caring. You cared about everyone and you always knew how to have fun too. You always made holidays so much fun when we celebrated holidays with you guys. You gave the best advice if Kevin or me needed help on something. I'm so glad you were apart of our family. I'm so glad Chu Thanh met you. He was always the happiest when he was with you. Micah has your smile , he's always cheerful.  You will be missed Co Lan 

I had the honor of working with Thanh and Lan and meeting their ADORABLE baby Micah.  Lan was a great person in all regards, kind, humble, and very smart, and she will be missed terribly.  You guys have been and continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.
