Lee Lewis Schell, age 90, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026, surrounded by a life well lived and the loved ones who filled it. Born on January 1, 1936, in Wichita to Lee and Alice (Paul) Schell Sr., Lee grew up with a deep appreciation for family, hard work, and the simple joys that make a life meaningful.
A proud graduate of East High School, Lee discovered early on that he had both a knack and a passion for the automotive world. What began as a modest filling station venture grew into a thriving entrepreneurial journey. He went on to open Gran Van, where conversion vans were made and vehicles were detailed. Lee loved the industry not just for the engines and craftsmanship and his love for cars.
On August 21, 1955, Lee married the love of his life, Phyllis (West). Their marriage was a true partnership—steadfast, joyful, and filled with shared adventures. Together they built a family rooted in devotion, laughter, and unwavering support.
A man of many interests, Lee was happiest when life was full. He loved boating and treasured the countless memories made at Grand Lake in Oklahoma. He was a devoted sports enthusiast, cheering on football and basketball with enthusiasm that never faded. And at home, there was rarely a moment when ESPN wasn’t playing in the background.
Lee also had a sharp mind and a playful spirit. He was a true wiz at crossword puzzles, often finishing them with a quiet confidence that made it look effortless. His sweet tooth was legendary, and he never turned down a treat—or a Diet Coke. Those small pleasures were part of what made him so endearing to the people who loved him.
A proud patriot, Lee held deep appreciation for the values on which the country was founded. His love for America was woven into his conversations, his principles, and the way he lived his life.
Lee is survived by his devoted wife, Phyllis Schell; his daughter, Debbie Nordyke; his granddaughters, Jennifer Schell, Megan (Andy) Frieze, Mandy (Mike) Lygrisse, Jessica Schell; and seven wonderful great grandchildren who brought him endless joy. He is also survived by his brother in law, Bill West, and sister in law, Carol Schell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Alice Schell; his brother, Bill Schell; and his beloved son, Kent Schell.
Those who knew Lee will remember his warm personality, his entrepreneurial spirit, his love for family, and his delight in life’s simple pleasures. His legacy is one of hard work, devotion, humor, and heart—a life lived fully and loved deeply.
A celebration of life service for Lee is currently pending.
