Lynda Kay Burkett

Lynda was born March 2, 1947 in Madill, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Leonard Albert and Thelma Ruth (Black) Hitt.

Lynda was raised in Wichita, Kansas where she graduated from Wichita West High School in 1965.

In 1979, Lynda graduated from Hutchinson Community College with a degree in Secretarial Science while raising 5 children as a single parent. She became employed at Farrar Corporation in Norwich, Kansas in 1979 where she started her career and as fate would have it, met her future husband ,Evan. She was later united in marriage to Dwight Evan Burkett on September 26, 1981.

Lynda completed her working career at Via Christi Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas where she worked as an Administrative Assistant. The couple continued to live and raise their children in rural Kingman County outside of Norwich, Kansas until 2000 when they moved to South Dakota for Evan’s new job.

Lynda loved the quiet that came with living in the country. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, watching black and white classic movies, macrame and oil painting. She also liked being outside watching birds and raising dogs, cats and chickens. Lynda also enjoyed growing flowers and having a vegetable garden. But her true passion and love were her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She cherished each and every one of them and enjoyed opening up her home to host them when they came to visit.

Everyone enjoyed telling stories about growing up in a large and loving family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Leonard Albert and Thelma Ruth Hitt, brothers Albert and Murphy Hitt and daughter Stacey Prier.

Lynda is survived by her husband, Evan; children, Chris Dolley (Brent), Mike Hampton (Amy), Jerry Balman (Rhonda), Jason Balman (Holly), Shara Woodruff (Paul) and Cade Burkett. She is also survived by her nephew Jesse, and grandchildren Sabrina, Matt, Jerika, Amber, Sarah, Samantha, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Erika, Hailey, Isaac, Owen, Bradan, Bayley and numerous great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2025 from 1:00 to 3:00 at Resthaven Mortuary, Wichita, Kansas. Interment to follow at Resthaven Mortuary.
