He was a graduate of Southeast High School, Butler County Community College and Friends University, where he eventually earned a Bachelor of Arts in Human Service/Psychology and The University of Kansas School of Social Welfare with a Masters of Science/Social Work.
On August 8, 1992, he married Patricia "Trish" Crandall at Central Christian Church in Wichita by Pastor George Bever. Trish was so excited watching Mike walk up to the church. He loved her so much and she him. He spent as much time on his hair that morning as she did. They were married at 10:30 am because they had a flight to catch at 1:00 pm to begin their honeymoon in Orlando, Florida at Disney World. Her favorite place on Earth. He was always so good to her and would have taken her anywhere. They went to Epcot Center, where they had carmel apples...he spent hours removing the carmel from his beard and mustache.
Michael proudly served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years, where he began his service in Long Beach, California in Communications, but spent the majority of his tour in Hawaii, where he learned to body surf.
He began his professional career in social detox after determining his love of working with this population. He spent time at COMCARE, in the Homeless Program, and a short stint at Hutchinson Community College assisting returning adult students. Michael was great at talking to the homeless and chemical dependent people and he enjoyed his talks with them. Ben Ratzlaff said "Mike always had a story" and he never knew a stranger. After telling Ben that Mike had gone to Paradise, he mentioned that "as long as he was around he'd continue to share his Mike's stories" which was a worry for Trish.
When not giving to the community, the pair loved to travel with Italy being a favorite abroad, yet their U.S. travels were hard to compare to, especially Florida where where he could get fresh fish. Honestly, he would do for and go anywhere for Trish, including giving up control of the TV remote, no questions asked!
Michael attended Salvation Army Church in Wichita, then Central Christian Church, then finally Northridge Friends in Wichita, where he became lifetime friends with Ben and Denise Staley (ministers), whom they spent many lunch and dinner dates together. He loved them so much!
His hobbies were many including fishing, kayaking, attending car shows, working on his '53 Ford F250 and talking "cars" with Harold Hills. He HATED sports. His favorite reply when someone would speak of sports was "How 'bout those Rams," very sarcastic.
He was a "GREAT" man in many eyes, especially Trish's and leaves a legacy to be proud of.
Preceded in death by: his mother; father; and younger sisters, Ginger Rich of Houston, TX, and Kathy Felt of Wichita, KS.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia "Trish" Felt; mother-in-law, Deloris Crandall; sister, Diane and Robert Lamecker of Stillwater, OK; nephew, Lynn and Robbie Rich of Houston, TX; along with numerous cousins and of course, Cookie, the white rat companion animal given to him by Carly and Todd Morris.
A visitation will be held Saturday, August 10, 2024 from 1pm to 3pm with a funeral service to follow at 3:00 pm, Resthaven Mortuary, 11800 West Highway 54, Wichita, KS 67209, followed by a graveside service in the Garden of Freedom.
