Michael Glenn ("Mike") Hughes, 59, of Sedgwick, Kansas, passed unexpectedly while visiting his son and family at their home on Marine Corps Base Camp LeJeune in North Carolina on Thursday, February 11, 2021.
Mike was born on January 4, 1962 in Ottawa, Kansas, youngest child of Max and Doris Hughes and was raised in Quenemo, Kansas. As a youngster Mike enjoyed living next door to his Grandpa Rollo's Garage and learning the "ropes" as he grew, literally at Grandpa's knee. A small town, idyllic childhood for sure.
When his parents moved to Waco, Texas in 1979, Mike stayed behind to finish high school in Melvern and work at Iowa Beef in Emporia. He graduated from Marais Des Cygnes Valley High School in 1980. Later that year he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving as Lance Corporal in Ordinance, Armory and Supply at Camp Pendleton, California until 1984.
Mike moved to Waco, Texas and had many types of jobs, from moving grain at a coop with his Dad, to a print factory and was working at Dunn's brake and tire in 1986 when this 'dyed in the wool' Chevy Man met his Dodge Dream, Melinda; who had just a month before, moved from Waco Street in Wichita, Kansas to Waco, Texas herself! What are the odds, these two crazy kids from Kansas - meet in Waco, Texas - and each have grandparents living in Kerrville, Texas = Divine Intervention!! "Love is patient, Love is Kind..." They were neither one perfect, but perfect for each other and were married at the courthouse on February 26, 1987.
A short time later they moved to Wichita and settled in, both working for the Wayman family. A true "Jack of all trades" but he was "the Master of Most", he could literally fix anything, he was a genius. A rare breed to find in auto repair - a tech with integrity. Mike was rock solid, hard working, dependable and highly respected by peers and customers alike. Quick with a joke, he always had a one-liner locked and loaded!
Mike wore many hats but the work he enjoyed the most was with guns. He took an at home course to become a certified Gunsmith and specialized in competition pistol and rifle building for short range and long range DCM competition, he even got Melinda to join a shooting league with him at the gun range.
Along comes Miranda and he melted. Such a proud, hands on Dad. After they moved to Sedgwick they survived 3 pregnancy losses before being blessed with Matthew. Michael loved his family most of all, and providing for them and making them happy was his daily mission.
His proudest days were when Miranda graduated from Wichita State and started her career, and when Matthew graduated from United States Marine Corps basic training and began service and when he married Jordan and the births of his granddaughters, meeting Camryn for the first time on his trip to North Carolina.
