Richard L. "Dick" Luke, age 87, Environmental Geologist and Engineer, passed away on Friday, November 25, 2022 in Wichita, Kansas. Richard was born on October 30, 1935 in Mulberry, Kansas the son of the late William Richard and Hazel Dorthea (Spoonhour) Luke.
Dick was born in Kansas; however, while attending the University of Nebraska, he became a true Husker. During this time Dick met the love of his life, Barbara "Bobbie", and soon after a courtship and college they married.
Richard was an Environmental Engineer by trade, but his business ventures began early in life working with Phillips 66 to business owner with Bobbie in Wichita. During Richard’s career he became an accomplished Environmental Geologist. Richard had a hand in testing the soil of many buildings you see around town prior to their construction. He tried to retire from that field many times in his life, but he was too valuable to see go.
Dick was not all work and no play, however. He had many loves. His wife, family, and Table Rock Lake. Trips to the lake were a staple in his life. Dick enjoyed being on the water, taking in the sights and sounds of mother nature, and of course, fishing! We knew the lake was in his blood when we would find him sleeping peacefully on the deck under the stars. Dick knew how to enjoy his parents’ retirement home to the fullest.
The lake brought Richard a sense of peace and a way to connect with God. While home in Wichita, he found that peace with his Covenant Presbyterian Church family. Richard was an active member, offering his time when and where he was needed. Church was his sanctuary.
Dick had the kindest soul and the patience of a saint. What he enjoyed most was loving his soulmate, Bobbie. It was difficult to fill that void after she passed, but we know that Dick is at peace now with her and we know they are embracing each other together with the Lord.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara "Bobbie" Luke; sons, Richard "Jeff" Luke and Todd "TRL" Luke; son-in-law, Thomas "Tom" Julian; brother, David Luke; sister, Billie and husband, Bill Krehbiel; step-grandson, Gregory "Boo" Schmidt.
