
Rick passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2026, in Wichita, Kansas at the age of 77. He was born to Virginia (Drennan) Karns and Joseph Smith on November 17, 1948, in Wichita, Kansas. He had five siblings, Wayne Johnson, David Johnson, Brenda (Smith) Stewart, Patricia Elzinrath and Craig Smith.
Rick graduated from USD 259 in Wichita. After graduating he joined the Army and Army National Guard. He was a veteran of the Vietnam war and was honorably discharged. After the military he worked various jobs before ultimately joining wildcat construction where he worked as a truck driver and equipment operator. He worked there until his retirement.
Rick enjoyed spending time at the lake, motorcycle trips and working on anything mechanical. His personal favorite trip was a motorcycle ride from Las Vegas, Nevada to Wichita, Kansas through the high desert. It was a spiritual experience where he described a comfort feeling like he’d lived there all his life. It felt like home although he’d never been there before. He also loved playing guitar and singing for family and friends as well as going to church. He was known for helping anyone in need at any time.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Karl Karns and all five siblings. He is survived by his son, Patrick Sean Smith of St. Louis, Missouri; grandchildren, Tristan Patrick Smith of Wichita, Kansas, Louden Joseph Smith of Okinawa, Japan; 5 nieces and 4 nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 28th at 11:00 am at Central Avenue United Methodist, 4920 W Central, Wichita, KS 67212.
