Steve lived with a steady loyalty and a deep, kind-hearted compassion that reached far beyond his own circle. He carried himself with respect, met people with genuine care, and—through both strength and humor—had a way of easing a room while still standing firm for what mattered.
Steve served as a Correctional Officer for the El Dorado Correctional Facility. He cared about his job, the officers who became his second family, and the responsibility of treating inmates with compassion. In the work he chose and the way he carried it out, his courage showed itself not in grand gestures, but in the quiet, selfless consistency of showing up, doing right by others, and making people feel seen and heard.
He loved family game nights and was a devoted Kansas City Chiefs fan. Steve also loved his country, loved his family, and loved his guns. He was known for giving freely of himself—always willing to give the shirt off his back (and did) to anyone in need—and his big, caring heart will be truly missed. Above all, Steve loved his children and his family.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, Everett Hughes, and his sister.
He is survived by his loving wife, Britny Harmon-Hughes; children, Shannon Hughes, Amber Hughes, Johnathan “Johnny” Hughes, and two step-children; mother, Barbara Hughes; chosen siblings, Hannah Harp and Joseph Whipple; along with extended family and many friends.
