Virgil D. Hanke, passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of September 5, 2018 at home at the age of 77. Family visitation and viewing will be Sunday September 9, 2018 at Resthaven Mortuary from 2-4 pm. Funeral Service will be Monday, September 10, 2018 at Westwood Presbyterian Church, 8007 W. Maple St., Wichita, KS at 2 pm. Preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Ruth Hanke; and his wife, Francis Hanke, whom he loved every day of his life. Survived by his brother, Duane Hanke and three children, Eric, Alicia and Justin Hanke. Virgil also has nine grandchildren, who all adored him. Born in Anthony, KS on September 20, 1940, Virgil enjoyed hunting, fishing and sports throughout his life. He served in the Air Force in the 1960s during the Vietnam War being deployed in Australia, the Philippines, New Zealand and various regions of the South Pacific. Following service he returned to Wichita, KS to meet his wife Frances and start his family. Virgil worked in computer programming with Farm Credit Bank for 25 years before retiring in 2006. He was always dedicated and hardworking during his career. Virgil provided for his family every second of his life. Selfless almost to a fault he cared for his father, mother and wife during their sickest days. His dedication to his two sons and daughter was unwavering. His three children cannot ever express to him how thankful they are for the life provided, advice, and time he dedicated to them. His grandchildren became the joy of his life and he always gave them everything he could. Virgil understood more than anyone that to truly help and care for someone, you have to give them your time and that your time was the most valuable thing you have. Virgil chose to always give every second of his time to his family and loved ones. Virgil defined what it is to be a good son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. His children and family will miss him and think about him every day of their lives.
