Visitation will be held from 2-8pm, Friday, November 12, 2010, at DeVorss Flanagan-Hunt Mortuary and at 9am Saturday, November 13, 2010 with Mass of Christian Burial following at 10am, St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Walt was born Sept 4, 1919 in Newton, KS the son of Frieda and Ernest Ruick.Walt was in the Merchant Marines during WWII, making 4 successful crossings. He was in the grocery business in Wichita for over 60 years. He owned or co-owned 3 IGA stores. Walt was a man of many talents: a wonderful father and grandfather, a great fisherman and hunter, an excellent bowler and a terrific ballroom dancer.
He was preceded in death by his wife Hazel; son Philip Johnson; parents and 5 brothers. He is survived by his beloved companion and caretaker Mable Hammond of 20 years and her son John; beloved dog Jolee; daughter Rosemary (Larry) Austin; 7 grandchildren; 9 great and 3 great-great grandchildren.
