

Born in San Germán, Puerto Rico, Jose embodied the values of service, education, and community leadership from an early age. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War as a member of an Infantry Division. His military career spanning 25 years was marked by courage, discipline, and honor, earning him commendations that reflected his dedication and bravery.
Following his military service, Jose pursued higher education with determination. He graduated from Trenton State College and later earned his Juris Doctor degree from Rutgers University School of Law Camden, becoming a member of the New Jersey Bar in 1981. His legal career spanned more than four decades, during which he became a respected figure in South Jersey’s legal and civic communities.
Jose was a founding partner of the law firm Velez & Mendez in Vineland, New Jersey. Throughout his career, he served in numerous important public roles, including Municipal Court Judge, Vineland City Attorney, public defender and Attorney for the Cumberland County Board of Social Services. In each position, he was known for his integrity, fairness, and steadfast commitment to justice.
Deeply committed to civic engagement, Jose was an elected member of the Vineland Board of Education and an active leader in voter registration initiatives. He was dedicated to the Hispanic community working tirelessly to empower the community. He was a founding member of the Vineland Hispanic political caucus, always advocating for representation, opportunity, and inclusion.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jose was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Nilda Velez, and a proud father to three cherished daughters Debbi, Mary and Lissa and grandchildren Tiffany, Tiara, Aidan and Julian. His family was his greatest joy and enduring legacy. He is survived by brothers Robert and David. Joe had a pilot's license and loved to fly his single engine plane.
Jose B. Velez will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his country, his profession, his community and his family. His life stands as a testament to service, leadership, and love. He leaves behind a legacy of honor, integrity, and commitment that will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
A visitation for Jose will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 from 8:00 AM to the 9:00 AM prayer service at Dignity Memorial Life Celebration Center, 7134 Powell Road Wildwood, FL. Committal with Military Honors will follow at 11 AM at Florida National Cemetery ,6502 SW 102nd Ave, Bushnell, FL.
