Alice was born in Finland in 1929, to Ellen and William Anderson who both emigrated from the Swedish section of Finland after World War I. She was raised in Bessemer, Michigan, and graduated from Wakefield High School, Wakefield, MI. She graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and worked for IBM in Chicago, IL wiring computer boards in the 50’s.
Alice was actively involved in the International Federation of University Women, the Virginia Gildersleeve International Fund, and the American Association of University Women, where she served as President of the AAUW Education Foundation. She received a Master’s degree in economics at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, and was the first Director of the State of Iowa’s Commission on the Status of Women. Alice was a role model and inspiration for many younger women across the country - and, indeed, the world - and provided stellar leadership in whatever position she agreed to undertake.
She was the wife of William (Ed) McKee, whom she met in Chicago while working for IBM. Married in Chicago in 1954, they moved to Des Moines IA and spent over sixty-three years together.
They moved to Williamsburg, VA, in 2007, and were residents of Williamsburg Landing and members of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church.
Alice is survived by her husband, three children, Karen McKee and her husband Hans Schwartz of Williamsburg, VA, Charles McKee of Stevens Point, WI, Martha Creaser and her husband Karl of Knutsford, United Kingdom, and two grandchildren, Ellen and David Creaser.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, February 21 at the Alvin Anderson Auditorium, Williamsburg Landing, 5700 Williamsburg Landing Drive, Williamsburg, VA. The family will receive visitors at a reception following the service.
