

She was born in Endicott, New York on November 1, 1938 and was preceded in death by her mother, Florence Alta (Fogle) Payne; her father, Curtis Alton Payne; her older sister, Betty Payne Avery; and her brother-in-law, Maurice Clyde Avery.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews: Mark Avery, Deborah (Avery) Doyal, Chris Avery, Judy (Avery) Allen, Paul Avery, James Avery, and Timothy Avery.
Alta completed the 8th Grade and was a member of the Methodist Church of Maine, New York. She derived a great deal of pleasure from doing a variety of handiwork. She crocheted, embroidered, and did beautiful cross-stitch. Her handiwork kept her both happy and busy.
Alta enjoyed sightseeing with her sister, Betty, and her brother-in-law, Maurice Avery.
Alta was happiest being with family members and playing games, especially dominoes. She loved watching Lawrence Welk, Heehaw, Green Acres and Wheel of Fortune. She had a love for cats in her childhood, and loved her nieces and nephews as they were growing up, calling them her “Beans.”
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2025 at 10:00 AM Maine Cemetery, Maine, NY.
