Born and raised in Newton, Massachusetts, Betty started working as a young adult as a draftswoman at Factory Mutual Insurance Company in Boston, where she met her husband of 72 years, Horace. Betty was an exceptionally creative woman, who loved drawing, sewing, decorating, and oil painting. Additionally, she enjoyed ballroom dancing and square dancing. Together with her husband, they established and operated the Upham Square Dance Hall in Kingston, NH. Betty employed her talents to organize many unique and festive events held at the hall over the years.
In the 1960s, Betty and Horace also founded a summer day camp at their lakeside home in Kingston where Betty taught Arts and Crafts. “Nana” is remembered as a wonderful grandmother who brightened lives with her delightful sense of humor and cultivated the spark of imagination within those around her. Among other things she taught her granddaughter Alison swing dancing and encouraged her singing career. Recognizing her grandson Alex’s love of history, she set up a small backyard archeology dig.
Left to cherish Betty’s memory are her husband, Horace Upham; daughter, Linda Upham-Bornstein (Peter Bornstein); and grandchildren, Alison Matthews (Chase) and B. Alexander Bornstein (Janet).
A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, December 15th at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church, 201 W Duke of Gloucester St, Williamsburg, VA. Condolences may be made at www.NelsenWilliamsburg.com
