Born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 24, 1957, Carl was the son of German immigrants, the late Carl and Evelyn Geiling. He grew up in Freeport, NY, where he met his high school sweetheart and future wife, Teri. Together, they built a life anchored in love, warmth, and service to others.
Carl was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. After settling in Williamsburg, Virginia, Carl and Teri raised their three children—Geoff, Christie, and Tim—in a home that was known by many as a second home. Their door was always open, and Carl’s quiet strength, kindness, and steady presence made everyone feel welcome.
A professional environmental engineer, Carl dedicated his career to wastewater treatment and sustainability—work he was deeply proud of. His commitment to protecting the environment was matched by his dedication to his community. Carl coached nearly every one of his children’s sports teams and became beloved by countless families for his remarkable patience, encouragement, and servant-hearted leadership.
Carl also had an incredible gift for connection. He was famous for his daily walks around Colonial Williamsburg with the family’s Westie, Rosie — off-leash and always ready to greet a stranger. He never hesitated to strike up a conversation, and his warmth, lighthearted humor, and curiosity left lasting impressions on everyone he met.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 45 years, Teri; his children: Geoff and his wife Brittany, along with their children Samuel and Emerson; Christie and her husband Jake, and their soon-to-be-born son Archie; and Tim and his wife Lizzy, with their children Jackson and Whit. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Evelyn, and his brother, Norbert.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Williamsburg Community Chapel. All who knew Carl are welcome to attend and celebrate a life filled with kindness, humor, and unwavering care for others. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be livestreamed. You can join the livestream at: www.wcchapel.org/geiling
Following the service, there will be a light reception with refreshments at the church. Later that evening, beginning at 5:00 p.m., all are invited (kids included) to Spoke & Art for an informal gathering with heavy hors d’oeuvres and drinks, a time to share stories, laughter, and memories in celebration of Carl’s life as a family and community. Parking is available next door at The Kensington School.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations in Carl’s honor to support youth sports scholarships at WISC (Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex)—a place where all kids, regardless of means, can experience the joy of sports, https://www.venmo.com/u/thewisc .
