Claud B. Brown of Williamsburg went to be with his Lord and Savior, and bride of 65 years, Ruth Casey Newton Brown, in heaven on January 29, 2015. Mr. Brown was born in Timmonsville, SC, on January 27, 1928. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Casey Newton Brown, his father and mother, Roy Letchner Brown and Rebecca Hicks Brown and nine brothers and sisters.
Mr. Brown attended Brownwood School in Sardis, South Carolina, joining the Marine Corp in 1947 during the Occupation of Japan just after World War II. He was stationed at the Naval Mine Depot, now known as the Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, VA. After serving his country in the Marines, Mr. Brown became a well-known and loved barber, serving residents for over 63 years as owner of Brown’s Barber shop and offering in home visits to those in need. Claud was also a Master Mason at the Chickahominy Lodge, AF & AM; however, he considered his greatest accomplishment to have helped build, serve and attend Williamsburg Christian Church for over 50 years. Mr. Brown was a faithful man, who loved all children, always had a smile on his face and a song in his heart, a story to tell and a gift of making everyone he met feel special. There was always a pocket of gumballs for anyone he might encounter. He often said, “It is not work, when you can serve your fellow man.”
Claud is survived by his son, William H. Brown, wife Gail; Russell A. Brown, wife Carolyn and Kenneth L. Brown, wife Kristen. He is survived as well by his grandchildren, Jessica L. Nieto (Eric), Justin L. Brown (Jennifer); Bryan C. Brown; J. Blake Brown; Brandon M. Brown (Lauren); J. Brent Brown (Meagan); Kenneth L. Brown and Ashley R. Brown, as well as 15 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him dearly.
The family will receive guests at Nelsen Funeral Home, Tuesday, February 3rd, 5-8 p.m. His Celebration of Life service will be held Wednesday, February 4th, 11:00 a.m. at the Williamsburg Christian Church, 200 John Tyler Lane, with burial immediately following at the Williamsburg Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made with a donation to the Williamsburg Christian Church Memorial Fund if you so desire.
