He married Deborah Jane (Deb) McElwee on November 17, 1984 in Thorntown, IN at the Thorntown United Methodist Church.
Donnie is survived by his loving wife, Deborah Jane (Deb); his daughters, Anna Catherine (Annie) and Sarah Elizabeth; and his son, Timothy (Tim), who lives in Lebanon, IN. He is also survived by his sisters, Becky (John) Glass, Aroda, VA, Patrice Reckley, Lebanon, IN, Kristine (David) Calvert, Lebanon, IN; and several nieces and nephews.
His parents and his brother, Mark David Herschell preceded him in death.
Donnie held an Associates Degree from ITT Technical Institute and worked for his family's business, Herschell's House of Appliances in Lebanon, IN and also worked for Highland SuperStores, RCA Thompson, Best Buy and several "mom and pop" repair shops, including Commercial TV in Williamsburg.
He was a gifted and talented Electronics tech and watched TV's change from "old tube-types" to the LCD and Plasma screens of today.
In October, 2013 thru July, 2014, he had a new career as a driver for Williamsburg Taxi. He loved showing newcomers and tourists his new hometown of Williamsburg, VA and loved wearing his Santa hat and watching the eyes of little ones light up, while in his taxi.
He was an avid ham radio operator and was a member of the Boone County Amateur Radio club, in Lebanon, IN and had attended, when work allowed, a few meeting of a local radio club here in the 'burg.
Donnie loved to fish and loved being near the water and loved driving into Norfolk and seeing the Navy ships at Naval Station Norfolk. He was also an Olympic caliber archer as well as a former Scout Master.
He loved his family and worked tirelessly to be a good provider and always tried to do the right thing by his family. Never self-serving and a proud man, he would give his last dime to help someone and felt badly when he couldn't. And, that continued the day of his death, when earlier that morning, he signed papers to donate his corneas and now, someone else, will be looking at the world through his beautiful eyes.
A visitation will be held at Wellspring United Methodist Church, 4871 Longhill Rd., Williamsburg, VA on Saturday, October 25 from 12-1pm, followed by a service at 1pm.
