He was born in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, to Virginia Seda Olivo and Pedro Olivo. After moving to New York City as a child, Efren attended Stuyvesant High School (’54), New York University (’58) and New York Medical College (’62). After medical school, Efren married Cecelia (Kendal) Olivo in 1965 and served in the Army during the Vietnam War era from 1967-1969. Upon leaving the service, Efren worked in private practice for obstetrics and gynecology in Rockland County, NY until retiring in 2013. Efren and Cecelia left New York for the final time on his 80th birthday to relocate to Ford’s Colony in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Throughout his life, Efren was a vociferous fan of sports, with a significant interest in golf, the Dallas Cowboys, and Los Angeles (Brooklyn) Dodgers. He was a Paul Harris Fellow with the West Nyack Rotary Club and later involved with the Rotary Club of the Historic Triangle. In his adult life, Efren was an avid golfer, with an enthusiasm for the sport that he shared with many of his children and grandchildren. His greatest pleasure, however, was telling his friends of the activities and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. His pride in them was evident every time he spoke of his family.
Efren is survived by his wife of 60 years, Cecelia; his children, Patricia (Robert) Howes, David (Linda) Olivo, Susan Marston-Olivo, and Christopher (Denille) Olivo; as well as his grandchildren, Jonathan, Max, Matthew, Justin, Kendal, Jackson, Taylor, Addison, Tucker, and Quinn; and by his sister Agrapinia Olivo Paluch. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and Pedro Olivo; his brother, Jaime Olivo; and his sister, Sofia (Olivo) Bones.
A celebration of life service will be held at Nelsen Williamsburg, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg, VA on Sunday, January 18 at 1 PM, immediately followed by a reception at Ford’s Colony Country Club. The service will also be available via live stream at https://www.facebook.com/125632257490458.
