Born on July 26, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, Betty lived a life defined by devotion to family, quiet strength, and deep compassion for others. In 1965, she and her beloved husband, Gerald “Gerry” Viers, moved to Newport News, Virginia, and later settled in Williamsburg in 1980, where she made her home for more than four decades.
Betty dedicated much of her professional life to caring for newborns as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the nursery at Riverside Hospital. Her gentle presence and nurturing spirit made her especially suited to this work, and she took great pride in caring for the youngest and most vulnerable until her retirement.
Outside of work, Betty embraced life fully. She enjoyed sailing, playing tennis, tending her garden, and, most of all, spending treasured time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her home was a place of warmth, love, and quiet encouragement, and she will be remembered for her kindness, patience, and steady grace.
She is survived by her sister Judy and brother-in-law Dale Bray; her sister-in-law Penny and brother-in-law Timothy Young; and her daughters, Laura Emerson and her husband Bryant Franklin, and Julie Anderson and her husband Gary Anderson. Betty was deeply blessed by her family and leaves behind five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Her grandchildren include Ashley Emerson and her partner Tommie Brooks, and their children Addison and Emmett Brooks; Adam Emerson and his wife Kelly Emerson, and their children Ryder and Saylor; Alexander Emerson and his wife Ashleigh Emerson, and their daughter Everleigh; as well as Samantha Anderson and Ian Anderson. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who will fondly remember her loving presence.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elizabeth Oros; her husband, Gerald Viers; her son, Ryan Viers; her sister-in-law Janet Ansley; and her brother-in-law Thomas Ansley.
Betty’s life was one of quiet devotion, unwavering love, and selfless care for others. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A private celebration of life will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Betty’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
