Born on October 8, 1930 in Burdette, VA Emma was the last remaining child of James and Martha Vinson. She married the late James Holmes, Sr. on October 8, 1950 and is survived by her children, James (Martha) and Cheryl. Her legacy extends to her 4 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
Emma devoted herself to Christian service primarily at First Baptist Church Jefferson Park where she faithfully performed her Deaconess duties. She could be depended upon to travel from Williamsburg to Newport News each month to ensure that all of the elements and tablecloths were prepared for Communion. She also accompanied Deacon Holmes to visit the sick and homebound members to make Communion and fellowship available to them.
She supported James in a wide variety of Church and Civic activities. She was a Life Member of the NAACP and dedicated many hours volunteering at Williamsburg Post Acute & Rehabilitation (formerly known as the Pines Nursing Home). Even after her retirement from the US Naval Weapons Station, Emma kept her office skills sharp. She mastered the entire Microsoft Office Suite using only the technical manuals included with the software.
Emma was an excellent cook and baker. She was especially talented at making all kinds of cakes and pies. Her flavorful fruit cake changed the minds all who were reluctant to sample it. She also canned the bounty of produce from James' garden. Emma was also a talented seamstress who worked with a wide range of textiles to create custom clothes for her family and friends. She could design patterns to replicate any garment. Emma was always appropriately attired for every occasion, especially Church. Her wardrobe included an array of suits, blouses and dresses which she accessorized with a stunning collection of hats, scarves and brooches.
Emma's kindness and quiet demeanor will be missed by those who knew and loved her.
A visitation for Emma will be held Sunday, June 29, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, VA 23188. A graveside service will occur Tuesday, July 8, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Rd, Suffolk, VA 23434.
