Fannye Doris Holden Scruggs Rorer, age 87, left this world for her eternal reward on April 23rd while tapping a finger to her favorite hymn - Amazing Grace. A 63-year resident of Williamsburg, Fannye’s greatest joys were her faith, family, and friends. Some of her happiest moments were spent with loved ones enjoying simple pleasures including picnics, pool outings, walks, church gatherings, birthdays, Christmas Eve, and many happy July days on the banks of the Tellico River at annual family reunions in Tennessee.
Raised in Englewood TN, Fannye grew up surrounded by a large and loving family in the faith-filled warmth of Englewood Baptist Church. After moving to the Williamsburg area in 1953, Fannye became an active member of Williamsburg Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years.
Fannye earned her nursing degree from East Tennessee Baptist Hospital in 1951 and, as a Nurse, cared for her patients with great compassion for 52 years. She was proud to have had the privilege of caring for thousands of patients as a registered nurse at Bell Hospital, Eastern State Hospital, and Williamsburg Community Hospital.
Fannye gracefully endured more than ten years with Alzheimer’s disease, teaching us the value of patience and faith. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Billy Stokes Scruggs, Sr.; her second husband, William E. Rorer, Sr.; her parents, Margaret Isabel and Charles Cleveland Holden, Sr.; and her eight siblings -Vivian, Sue, Charles, Wayne, Dean, Loyde, Mayme, and Hugh.
Left to continue her legacy of love and faith are her children, -Tresa Bobbitt (Larry), Billy Scruggs (Shari), Lee Scruggs (Pam); William E. Rorer, Jr. (Judy), and Brenda Lamb – and literally dozens of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. However, if you knew Fannye, you also knew you were part of her family from the minute you first saw her. Simply put, she was our bright, shining Sun and we were happy and blessed to be in orbit around her.
The family will receive visitors at Nelsen Funeral Home in Williamsburg on Sat., April 30 from 6-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Williamsburg Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Sun. May 1. The family will hold a private interment following. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to Williamsburg Baptist Church.
