

A member of St. Bede Catholic Church, he retired from the U.S. Navy having served his country in both the Vietnam and Cold Wars.
Over the course of his 26-year career in aviation maintenance, he rose through the enlisted ranks to retire as a Lieutenant Commander (O-4). He deployed on aircraft carriers to the Western Pacific and Mediterranean, and was stationed in Atlantic City, Hawaii, California, Massachusetts, Maryland and Virginia. After retiring from active duty, he worked for many years with Tidewater Community College in the Apprentice Program at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
An avid gardener, he enjoyed growing vegetables, fruits and flowers. Farrell’s favorite flowers were peonies and siberian irises.
Farrell is survived by his wife of 63 years, Theresa (Jannatty) Braun; son, John and Mary (Peters) Braun ; daughters, Maria and John Ash, Joanne and Neil McNeill, Karen and Bruce Smith; grandchildren, Jennifer (Ash) Tzavaras, Ryan Ash, Meghan Braun, Theresa M. Braun, Sarah Braun, Alyssa McNeill, Michael McNeill and Lilly McNeill; great-granddaughters, Efthimia Tzavaras amd Despina Tzavaras; brother, Clarence Braun of Menasha, Wisconsin; and sister, Rosemary Ulmann of St. Petersburg, Florida.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 30th from 5-8pm at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg. A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, October 31st at 11am at St. Bede Catholic Church, 3686 Ironbound Rd, Williamsburg with the interment to follow at 1pm at Peninsula Memorial Park, 12750 Warwick Blvd, Newport News.
