Jerry Clarke, 77, passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 17, 2017 following a long battle with cancer.
He was born in Chesterfield County, VA on February 19, 1940. Following graduation from Thomas Dale High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy spending most of his six years of service on submarines. The highlight of his time in the Navy was meeting his future wife, Joan, while he was stationed in Connecticut.
After his service, Jerry earned an Industrial Engineering degree from Virginia Tech. He began his professional career at Newport News Shipbuilding, then moved to Newport News Industrial and eventually left to co-found Energy Services Group in Williamsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alison and Millie Clarke. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Joan; their three children, son David Clarke (Martha); daughters, Suzann Balog (Ken); Beth Stewart (Michael); sister, Sharon Broaddus (George); and six grandchildren Alexandra Balog, Nicholas Balog; Ellen Clarke, Andrew Clarke; Duncan Stewart, Ethan Stewart.
Jerry was an avid golfer and long time member of the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course. He was proud to have served in the U.S. Navy. He was honored to have served on the Virginia Tech Engineering Committee of 100, the Ut Prosim Society, Academy of Distinguished Alumni of Virginia Tech, the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg, the Elks Club of Sebastian, FL, The American Legion in Sebastian, FL, Saint Sebastian Catholic Church, and St Bede Catholic Church in Williamsburg.
Jerry's playfulness, sense of humor, storytelling and generosity had a lasting impression on all who met him. He dearly loved all his family, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. The friendships he and Joan made lasted decades and he was always ready to make new ones. He will be terribly missed by family and friends but his influence and impact will survive for eternity.
Services will be held on Monday, October 23 at 11am at St. Bede's Catholic Church on Ironbound Road with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, it is kindly requested that a donation be made in Jerry's name to St. Jude Children's Hospital or a charity of your choice.
