Gerry was born in Acton, Massachusetts on September 6, 1936 and spent the past 21 years living in Williamsburg, Virginia, a place that both he and his wife, Mary Jo Tuttle (predeceased), fell in love with during their many visits to see their son Jerry while he attended the College of William and Mary. Mary Jo and Gerry were college sweethearts and celebrated 60 wonderful years of marriage.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, he was a lifelong friend to many. Gerry was very proud of his family’s patriotic lineage, with his (many greats) grandfather serving as Captain of the Acton Minutemen. He kept his love for history dear his whole life and attended many classes through William & Mary’s Wren program. Gerry was the first in his family to attend college, obtaining a BBA from the University of Massachusetts. He was a proud member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, a membership he wound up sharing with his grandson. Thereafter, he enjoyed a fulfilling career in New York City as a retail buyer and eventually moving to the manufacturing side of retail. He often claimed he was no salesmen, but his dry sense of humor ultimately made him a very successful “anti-salesman”.
Gerry never met a ball sport he did not love, and he was a fierce competitor. He excelled at everything from baseball, to golf, to ping pong. His most favorite day would be on the golf course with children and/or grandchildren trying to instill in the next generation the love of sport, while for certain doing his best to win. He was cherished for his generous spirit, including friends and family in everything from pool parties, holidays, and vacations. Finally, his spiritual being was present through his days as Warden and youth group leader at St. Joseph Episcopal Church, Elmsford, NY. Above all, Gerry’s devotion, friendship and loyalty to family and friends will be dearly missed.
Gerry is predeceased by his wife, Mary Jo Tuttle, and his son, Jerry Tuttle. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Tracey and Mark Lunenburg of Branford, CT; his sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Ray Weaving of Hampton, NH; and his brother George Tuttle of Sutton, MA and his daughter-in-law and son-in-law, Stephanie Tuttle; and Ramsey Walker of San Francisco, CA. He was the proud grandfather and great-grandfather of seven grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
A memorial service will be held this spring, with details to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Gerald L. Tuttle, Jr. Scholarship Endowment at William & Mary. Please mail your check to the William & Mary Foundation, P.O. Box 1693, Williamsburg, VA 23187 or give online at impact.wm.edu/tuttle
