Glenda was born in Suffolk in 1951 to Denva Layton White, Jr. and Nell Carr White. Glenda attended Mary Washington College and earned an MBA at the College of William & Mary. She worked for William & Mary for over thirty years, retiring as the Director of the Budget.
Glenda was strong, independent yet humble, caring, and an eager servant of life. As a young woman, Glenda marched to the beat of her own drum and was lovingly called a "gutsy gal" by her children's great uncle Irvin. She was a voracious reader from childhood. Glenda passed on this love of literature to both of her children and to her granddaughters. She was happiest and most at peace sitting on the beach (with book in hand) or gazing over a body of water.
She loved her family with all her heart. She was fortified by her faith in God, which allowed her to lead by example, emphasizing kindness, compassion, integrity, and service. Glenda served Williamsburg Baptist Church as both a deacon and treasurer. She loved walking, hiking, and she was an avid gardener. In recent years, she shared this talent with her granddaughters. After retirement, she followed her passions for giving back to the world, for curiosity, and for engagement with community by becoming a Virginia Master Naturalist. In addition, she served as Treasurer for the Historic Rivers Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists.
Glenda was preceded in death by her brother, Donny White of Norfolk in 2016 and sister-in-law Barbara White in 2021. Glenda is survived by her husband, Lynn Underwood; her daughter, Elizabeth Pittman; her son, John Travis Pittman; and her granddaughters, Sophie, Charlotte Josephine, and Alice Mae. Glenda is also survived by her brother, Denva Layton White, III.; sister, Nelda White; and brother David White. She is further survived by her first husband, Dale Pittman of Petersburg, VA; as well as a large, extended family.
