
Harold Stephen "Steve" Scudder, of Williamsburg, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, September 9, at the age of 61. Steve was born in Portsmouth, VA., on August 26, 1953 to Harold and Erma Pritchard Scudder. He grew up in a Navy family and lived with his family in Rhode Island, Hawaii, and the Tidewater area of Virginia.
Steve graduated from York High School in Yorktown, VA. in 1971. After high school, he started classes at Christopher Newport University, Newport News, VA. Steve was inspired to join the U.S. Navy when his father passed away in 1973. He completed his basic training at Great Lakes U.S. Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, IL., in 1973, becoming a corpsman. With his training complete, Steve was stationed at the U.S. Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown, VA. and later was stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC.
After his time in the Navy, Steve attended the College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, VA. Steve worked for many years as a laboratory technician and also at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, VA.
Steve married Sandra Kay Younce, of Collettsville, NC. on June 12, 2001. They made their home in both North Carolina and then in Yorktown, VA. They were separated at the time of his death.
Steve was an avid reader, and spent time meditating on the books he read. He shared his love of the outdoors with Sandra, spending time in nature hiking and camping. Steve enjoyed classical music and loved old movies. He thought highly of his family and friends, and delighted in cooking for those in his life. Steve was a competitive game player. He was a very talented tennis player, spending time on the court with his brother or simply watching tennis matches on the television. He is remembered fondly by his niece for playing hours of board games with her brother and her. Steve loved spending time with his family and friends, he was also a fun and loving person to the children in his life.
Steve was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Erma Pritchard Scudder, and his nephews Matthew Scudder and Christopher Luke Foster.
Steve is survived by his brother Howard Keith Scudder, of Gloucester, VA., his niece Tara Scudder Aguilar, of Bozeman, MT., and her family, his former wife Sandra Scudder, of Yorktown, VA., and her children Rob Hoyle, Sherry Hoyle, Bryan Hoyle, Tonya Hoyle, and Will Hoyle, as well as Sandra's numerous grandchildren all of North Carolina, his cousin Janet Deaton and her husband, Jerry, of Poquoson, VA., and their daughters, Jeanne, Julie, and Jill and their families. He is also survived by many extended family members and by many close friends.
Cremation has taken place. Nelsen Funeral Home of Williamsburg, VA., is in charge of arrangements. No services are planned at this time.
