Daddy was a PFC in the army.  When he was in basic training in Colorado, he got a commendation from his commanding officer for his role in putting out a fire at a local business, thereby saving much of the store and merchandise.   He was later stationed in Germany.  My mom joined him at some point and it was there that I was conceived.  He was due to be discharged in 1958 when I was also due.    The army decided to send him home in '57 so they could travel safely home before my birth.  He was proud to have served as a medic in the army and had many tales to tell.   I am traveling to Germany this year for the first time.  I know he would be thrilled.  This photo is the only one I have ever seen of him during his army days.  However, I do have his footlocker with his name, rank, address, etc.  I treasure it.

This was my father's last Christmas.  The home he was in was in lockdown due to Covid so we could only do window visits.  The staff would call me so we could talk using the phone rather than yelling through the window.  We took him homemade cookies (see his hand) and gifts which the staff let him open while we were there.  It broke my heart not to be able to be inside with him but it was great to see him smile and hear him joke around as usual.

My dad came to mind today, as he often does.  He wore glasses.  I don't know how old he was when he got his first pair but as my dad, he wore glasses - but not all the time.  Sometimes he would set them down and then need them when he was in another part of the room or house.  He would often ask me to retrieve them.  I loved doing this.  I'd put them on and the floor would look like it was far away.  I would take awkward, giggling steps as I delivered my dad's specs.  I currently have a new prescription in my glasses and am having trouble adjusting to them.  This has brought up this memory.

I worked at Busch Gardens in the Festhaus bakery.  It was there that I learned to make Black Forest Cakes.  My dad loved them.  At some point I decided to make one for him at home.  I used real ingredients (better than the cheap stuff from BG.) It was a 2 day production but worth it because he enjoyed the cake so much.  The ironic thing is I would not eat it because I don't like whipped cream. 
The year my mom passed, we had my dad over for a family meal for his birthday I decided to make the cake for him as a surprise.  While I was in the kitchen preparing lunch, my dad was in the family room telling my aunt and uncle about how I used to make this amazing cake at BG and how much he loved it.  My daughter-in-law and I looked at each other in shock.  He hadn't mentioned the cake in years and then mentioned it the very day that I had made one!  I couldn't wait for dessert.  I will never forget the look on his face when I brought the cake to the table.

This photo sits on my desk.  My dad and I were always close.  We shared a love of nature and photography.  I learned so much from him.

My father has been gone 2 years now.  He now has a new granddaughter-in-law and a great granddaughter.  He would have loved seeing me become a grandma.  
He was into photography for most of his life.  I have photos that he took when he was in Germany while in the army.  He bought me my first Kodak box camera when I was a little girl.  It was the kind with the cube-shaped flash bulbs and cartridge film.  I still have it and a few photos I took with it.  Over the years he taught me to use 35mm cameras.  He taught me techniques and I emulated his style.  As an adult, I started giving him framed photos and photo books of my work.  He loved discussing them with me, telling me what he saw in each photo and making note of my technique.  When he lost the sight in one eye, he had to stop taking photos.  At that time he gave me all of his equipment.   I treasure it.  

My father was the hero of any jelly-fish infested beach he was on.  He knew how to safely remove them from the water, creating a safe swimming space for other beach-goers.  He grew rose bushes at the house I lived in as a little girl.  When he passed, I planted a rosebush in my yard in his memory.  It has flourished.  He was an avid photographer.  His photos adorned his home and were also used for calendars and cards that he gave to family and friends.  He passed his love of photography, his knowledge, and his cameras on to me.  

Random memories of life with my dad
1.	He drove a TR4A – He always got a crew cut before heading to UVA to do research and he’d drive with the top down and get a sun burnt head
2.	The GIANT turtle he put in his trunk and brought home so I could see it.  
3.	Summer evening drives on the parkway counting rabbits – extra points for spotting a groundhog.
4.	We used to save turtles and take them to “Turtle Land.”  
5.	He went to NEA conventions as local president.  He brought me a silver cat pin from Dallas that I wore to the funeral. 
6.	He would pick jellyfish out of the water at the beach so no one would get stung.  This made him very popular!
7.	When we played Monopoly he had me be the banker, so I’d learn to count money.  (It took me a while to figure out his trick.)
8.	He taught me the Latin names of trees as the CW information center.  I was only about 4 or 5.  He’d quiz me, and we’d impress the tourists.
9.	Looking up the hill and seeing him in his car watching me play field hockey – as not to embarrass me.
10.	His tales, (that got longer with each telling),  of buying a car in Germany, our trip to “New Pechico,” buying the Tanzanite earrings for me in Kenya…
11.	He bought me a used Vega when he became concerned for my safety when taking rides from people to get home from college.
12.	He drove to get me and my riders late at night at White’s Truck Stop on 81 when my car caught fire!  He never complained.
13.	He had one role in planning my wedding.  He promised it wouldn’t rain.  It did early in the day but stopped before the ceremony.    
14.	He had the band at my wedding play Night Train at least a half dozen times.  When the band asked if they should keep playing it, I told them he was paying their bill.  
15.	He brought me a Lindsey plaid kilt, vest, and change purse from Scotland.  
16.	The lenses and cameras he gave me and all that he taught me about photography.  He loved critiquing my work but always made me feel good.

Although we know that this time comes to all of us, it still brings great sorrow but also memories of better and happier times when all was right in our world.  We will all miss Henry, as we do your Mom, but there are many pleasant memories that come to mind even in the midst of our sorrow.  Be strong and keep in touch.


Mrs. Postman, I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your father. You and your family are in my heart and mind during this difficult time. Although I never had the opportunity to meet your father I am sure he was a wonderful man to raise such a caring daughter and remarkable teacher as you.

Diane, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your father.  I never had the opportunity to meet you dad, but I know he must have been a wonderful person.  A good father leaves his imprint on his daughter for the rest of her life.  You are an incredible person and I know it was the love of both of your parents that made you the caring and thoughtful person you are today.  Always remember that he loved you deeply and that when you are your best, you are your father's daughter.

To my dearest Diane,
I’ll never forget the day I met your father.  It took a little work to build his trust, breaking through the protective shield that he had built around his only child (especially being a Yankee AND from NY).  But it wasn’t long before your family of three welcomed me in, and I truly believe we became a family of four.  Yes, our fishing trips didn’t work out, and our politics didn’t align.  But he and I had so many great conversations over beers.  He was a deep thinker, and he brought that out in me too.  One of my fondest memories was driving with him up to Farmville for your grandmother’s funeral.  It was probably the longest the two of us were ever in a confined space, and our conversations ranged from the mundane to the philosophical (stop rolling your eyes).  I remember sitting with the two of you the night your mom died, when there wasn’t really anything to say to ease his pain.  We were just there, together.    I watched with such joy as your relationship with him grew closer and the bond grew stronger with each milestone and each “lunch date.”  Then, when I retired, you both welcomed me into the circle.   The last couple of years have been incredibly difficult, but your devotion to your father was unwavering, and the sheer joy on his face whenever you walked into the room made all his troubles melt away.  I am so thankful that his last words to you were “I love you too.”  And so do I.

Our heart goes out to all of you for the loss of your father / grandfather. Diane, we know how close you and your dad were and all of the things and many interests that you shared.  Please take comfort that he is now with your mom. You were a wonderful daughter to him and he loved you very much.

Diane: As you know, Henry were colleagues at James Blair HS and Lafayette where he was science department chair for many many years .. we did not let him vacate that position that he occupied so well.

It was a bit annoying, however, to hear the EMT radio during our lunch time when we were all gathered in the science department office. He seemed to enjoy his responsibilities with the group and of course we heard many stories of his EMT life. And of his summer travels.

Not too many years ago Gus and I had lunch at a local restaurant with Henry. Most of the conversation was between those two men about their travels .. nothing with me about our shared work  history,, and that's OK.

Mike and I are so sorry to hear about your father/grandfather’s passing. We know this is a very sad and difficult time for all of you.  Diane, we know how close you were to your father, and what an incredible influence he had on your life, from teaching, to Science, love of animals, and especially photography.  You not only embraced and lived these influences, you passed them along to Zach and Nathan, and your father’s love will lives on through them. 
Please try to have comfort and peace in knowing that he has been reunited with your Mom, his one true love.

I,ll never forget he always called me little sister

Mr. Lindsey was my biology teacher ay James Blair High School.  His  classes were fun and filled with good information.   After more than 50 years I am still using things I learned from him.  I enjoyed his class immensely.   To his family:  Please accept my heart felt condolences and prayers.

Henry Lindsey led a life of service to Jean, his childhood sweetheart and wife of 58 years, to Diane, his devoted daughter, to his community through his 40 years of teaching and to his country through his military service. 
He gave generously and his generosity was returned in kind. He loved and was loved. His intelligence, wit and kindness live on in the people who knew and loved him.  His goodness will forever enrich his family, friends, former students and colleagues. He will be missed and will never be forgotten. 

Dear Diane, 

One's life is much more than a series of events.  It's a set of morals  and ethics that one lives by and lessons that one teaches that define a person.   

The way you treat people - with respect and compassion - is a reflection of Henry.    Your warmth, honesty and integrity began with Henry.   The friends and family who gather around you is because of the person that Henry taught you to be. 

Through you, he lives on.   He will forever be a part of you, Eric, Zachary, Nathan and your extended family.  

May his memory be a blessing.
