Hugh was a member of the Christ Community Church and enjoyed woodworking, gardening, his labrador, and chickens. He loved taking his grandchildren to their events and cheering them on in their various activities.
He served his country for 27 years in the Army and received various decorations during his career. After retiring from the Army, he began his second career in civil service at Fort Monroe.
Hugh is survived by his wife, Judith Kalns; son, Andre Kalns and his wife; daughter, Patricia “Trish” Chauvin and her husband, Joseph; and grandchildren, Alexandra and Luke Chauvin and Alexander Kalns.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 P.M. on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg. Interment with military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
