James B. Keesling, 65, passed away peacefully at his home on October 31, 2014. Jim was born September 29, 1949, in Spokane, Washington and is survived by his mother, Catherine S. Keesling (Hampton); brother, Dr. Garland Keesling (Forest Hill, MD); two aunts, Pat Keesling (Virginia Beach), and Bette Wilde (Ocean City, MD); uncle, Dr. James Reynolds (Lubbock, TX); and numerous cousins scattered throughout the country. He is preceded by his father, E.G. Keesling, Jr., and his wife of 10 years, Teresa Carrie.
Jim served a short time in the Marine Corps at the ages of 18 and 19, where he was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and the Purple Heart. Following his discharge, he briefly lived in Hampton. Jim subsequently attended Johnson State College, Vermont, where he earned a degree in psychology. Following graduation, he lived 4 years in Cape Cod. Jim returned to Hampton and took a checker position with the International Longshoremen Association, Local 862, which provided for a prosperous 25+ year career.
Jim had a zest for life that infected all around him. He was an active outdoorsman whose passion for hunting took him near and far, including three trips to Africa. When not busy with the chainsaw and log splitter, he was attentive to the care of his home and property. Jim was an avid reader that included numerous authors on the New York Times best seller lists; as well as obscure authors whose writings not only entertained but also provoked thought. In his time, he was an endurance athlete which included several Marine Corps marathons.
Despite the demands on his time and resources, Jim was always giving of himself to family, friends, and neighbors regardless of their needs or how short the notice. We are all truly better persons for having known him.
A private service will be held.
