John married Margaret (Maggie) Rich of Janesville, WI on August 18, 1958 at St. Mary's Church in Janesville. They resided in Cleveland for only three years before moving to Virginia. The Washington, DC area was where they made their homes until retirement. In 1998, both retired, the two moved to Williamsburg, where they built a home at Ford's Colony and joined St. Bede’s Parish. After Maggie passed away in 2008 from a Cerebral Hemorrhage, John sold the home in 2010 and moved to Colonial Heritage, Williamsburg, and then Patriot’s Colony, Williamsburg, in 2018.
