John was born on April 26, 1927 in Lanexa, Virginia. He was the youngest of 6 siblings. John attended The Matthew Whaley School but left to serve in the Army at Fort Lee in 1945. He returned to Matthew Whaley to graduate in 1946. He was a member of James River Baptist Church and worked as a carpenter to build the main church building. He sang in the Men’s Quartet and choir for many years. In his youth, he was an avid go cart racer and enjoyed playing baseball. He also loved golfing and showcased his green thumb through his prolific garden. His greatest joy came later in life when he became Poppy to his beloved grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his wife of 76 years, Peggy.
John is survived by his three sons, John Jr. (Susan), Frank (Lynn) and Thomas (Leigh); and four grandchildren, John III, Allison, Ashby and Gabrielle.
We will celebrate John’s life on Friday, March 6, 2026 at 1:00 at James River Baptist Church.
