She was born December 20, 1931 in Ponca City, Oklahoma, the only child of Gladys and Raymond. She grew up in Washington, DC and graduated from Western High School in 1949. She attended the College of William and Mary, American University, George Washington University and the Army Language School.
Before moving back to Williamsburg in 1988, Mary was involved in various military communities where she lived with her family. She was very active throughout every aspect of whatever community she lived in, whether home or abroad, and enjoyed playing tennis, volunteering, gardening, antiquing and creating beauty in places and lives.
She moved back to Williamsburg to Kingsmill in 1988, where she met and married her Jimbo. They made treasured friends there through golf and tennis and travel, before moving to Patriots Colony in 2004. Mary was also an active member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, where she was an advisor, and the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church where she served on the Flower Guild. She avidly supported the military community in many ways, including volunteering at the Fort Eustis medical clinic and the thrift shop. She was actively involved in starting the Williamsburg Farmers Market with Libby Oliver. She also enjoyed her membership in the Antiques Adventures group where she was a board member.
Mary was a gardener, causing both flowers and people to flourish as she tended them with love and care as she watered them with phone calls, cards and hospitality. She was the strength and glue in her family as beloved Mom to her children, Mee Maw to her six grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, and a dear friend to her neighbors, community, and people scattered throughout the world.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Inskeep; and two children from her first marriage, Sally Conniff of Woodinville, Washington and John Foldberg and his wife Carrie of Williamsburg; and stepson Jeff Inskeep of Marietta, Georgia. Also surviving her are six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, all of whom were an important part of her life.
A celebration of life and reception will be held at a later date. Please see the online obituary notice at Nelsen Funeral Home as details become available.
