

Mrs. Young, daughter of the late William James Norfleet and Carrie Mason Norfleet, was born in Washington, D.C. in 1927, and grew up in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1948 she and Stewart Young, who was starting an Air Force career, were married.
As an Air Force wife, she made her home in many places, in Europe, the Orient and throughout the United States. She was a peninsula resident for over 30 years, first in Hampton and later in Williamsburg.
A graduate of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, Mrs. Young received a Bachelors Degree in Zoology from Cornell University in 1948 and a Master's Degree in Library Science from University of Maryland in 1969. She served in the libraries of Clark Air Base in the Philippines, Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) School of Nursing, and Hampton Veterans Administration Medical Center. For many years she was a volunteer at the Research Library of the Mariners Museum in Newport News. After moving to Patriots Colony retirement community in Williamsburg, she helped establish and maintain the library there.
Mrs. Young was a pioneer in the use of MEDLINE computer searches to assist physicians and medical personnel to obtain timely medical information from the internet, leading to improved patient care. Her clinical library work at the Hampton Veterans Administration Medical Center was published in JAMA in 1986. Her work was also recognized with a profile in Vanity Fair magazine.
Mrs. Young is survived by 3 children: Dr. Stewart G. Young and his wife Roberta of Blythewood, SC; Mary N. Young and her husband Jonathan D. Ross of Arlington, MA; and James B. Young and his wife Deborah of Lynchburg, VA. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Patriots Colony; 6000 Patriots Colony Drive in Williamsburg, Virginia on Monday, October 12, 2015 at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Hampton National Cemetery, Hampton, Virginia on Tuesday October 13, 2015 at 10 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Library, Mariners Museum, 100 Museum Drive, Newport News, VA. 23606.
