MJ "Jay" Hobgood Jr.

MJ Hobgood Jr. “Jay”, 58, of Williamsburg, passed away on April 24, 2025. Born on August 9, 1966 in Newport News, VA, he was preceded in death by his parents, MJ Hobgood and Ann Selvey Hobgood, as well as his black lab, Kaylie Hobgood.

Following his graduation from both high school and trade school, MJ went on to work as an auto mechanic and tow truck driver for over 33 years. He was a man who loved to work on cars or be out on the water fishing whether off the pier or on our boat. He loved his family and his dogs.

Whenever he would meet someone and they would ask, “How are you doing?”, he would say ... “I’m good, as long as I’m looking at the grass and not the roots.”

Even though he is gone, he will still be looking at the grass and not the roots!

As a successful mechanic or even if he just Fixed Something, he was also heard to say ….. “I throw my hands skyward and say these hands have been touched by God.”

He will be missed by his wife, Laura; son, Andrew (Jessica); daughters, Jami (Nicole) and Brandy (John); grandchildren, Marshawn, Damian, and Spencer; as well as his sweet lab dog, Kady.
