

He leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Marianne; two sons and their families: Allan and his wife Charlotte, and grandchildren Tyler and Lindsey; and a son Mark, his wife Karrie and granddaughter Lorelei.
Ray was born July 23, 1939 in South Windham, ME. He attended Potter Academy High School and joined the U.S. Army at the age of 18. After basic training and advanced training as a military policeman, Ray was assigned to Berlin during the Cold War and Vietnam era. While in Germany, he witnessed the building of the Berlin wall and the separation of East from West Berlin. Ray graduated from the first class of the newly established Non-Commissioned Officer academy in Berlin, after which he received the Army Commendation Medal.
During his tour of duty in Germany, Ray was credited with helping prevent the suicide of a fellow soldier after the soldier was detained at a Soviet Checkpoint in East Berlin during a heightened period of tension between the Soviet Union and the United States. Ray was discharged in 1964 at Ft. Eustis, VA after 6 ½ years of honorable service.
Subsequent to his military service to our country, Ray served in many positions at Ball Packaging Products, retiring as Production Control Manager in 2001. In his free time, Ray enjoyed golfing, fishing, car racing and poker as well as yard work and home repairs.
Ray was preceded in death by his father, Joseph; mother, Arlene; brothers, Charles and Joseph; and sister, Ellen; as well as his first son, Michael; and his granddaughter, Madalyn.
Ray and Marianne have been residents of Williamsburg since 1964.
A private service for family and friends will be held on Friday, January 31 beginning at 2 PM at Nelsen Funeral Home 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, VA 23188.
