Richard was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Rose and Arthur Gould. He graduated from Mumford High School in 1955, and thereafter obtained a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Masters in Urban Planning from the University of Michigan. Richard enjoyed sailing on the Great Lakes and the Chesapeake Bay. He was Past Commodore of Great Lakes Yacht Club , and a skilled captain in many regattas.
The family relocated to Williamsburg in 1983 where he continued to practice architecture in the Tidewater area. Richard and his loving wife of almost 65 years, Rubyjean Gould, enjoyed the arts, sailing, and traveling together.
Surviving are his wife, Rubyjean; son, Anthony Ethan Gould, and his wife Laura of Bristow, Virginia; son, Seth David Gould, and his wife Melissa of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; and grandchildren, Nick, Jani, Andy, Maggie, Joey, Hannah, Ben, Alex, and Sawyer.
