

Sanford MacCallum “Sandy” Whitwell, 90, born March 25, 1924, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2014, with his family by his side. He was born in Tacoma, WA to Alice Ruth MacCallum and George Edward Whitwell, and is also predeceased by his sisters, Marie Louise and Margaret Ruth Whitwell. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan Eicker Whitwell, four children and their spouses, Susan Ruth Whitwell of Williamsburg, VA; George Edward and Mary Barta Whitwell of Rocky Mount, NC; John Sanford and Donna Drexler Whitwell of Ashburn, VA; and Amy Whitwell and Eric Matthew Schreiber, of Wayne, PA. He is also survived by ten grandchildren. He was a graduate of Hill School, and he earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell and an L.L.B. from George Washington. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Andrew Jackson in the Pacific from 1943-1946. In 1987, Sandy retired, after 30 years of service, as Executive Vice President with National Distillers and Chemical Corporation.
Sandy loved playing tennis and golf, working in the yard, and being near the water. The light of his life in retirement was spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He guided them all with wisdom and love.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 8, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., at 4 p.m. Mr. Whitwell’s family will receive friends following the service.
