

Stanley attended Virginia Tech, where he took part in ROTC. He then went on to be a project engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation, and retired after 36 1/2 years at VDOT. Stanley was instrumental in building and planning roads throughout Virginia including routes 60, 199, and in 1952, I-95.
He was an avid gardener, loved fishing, hunting, and golfing. He loved the Lord, and was active in numerous churches all of his life. Most recently, he was a member of Smith Memorial Baptist Church, where he led many bible study groups.
A loving father and grandfather, Stanley is survived by his sons, Michael Gardner (Laura), John Gardner (Kelly), Robert Gardner, and Scott Gardner (Lisa); his grandchildren, Brandy Gardner, Brittney Gardner, Brooke Gardner, and Brandon Gardner (Tracy); two great-grandchildren, Liam and Deacon; step grandson, Grant Vreeland; six nieces and many friends, including very special loving friends at Commonwealth Senior Living.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, Virginia, 23188.
